In the very first level, the raiders mop the floor with me, mainly due to far superior numbers, over and over again. Did I miss something? What is the way to go?

It is been a while that I played it, but if I remember correctly you can recruit in the castle hexes in the middle. If you wait for the first on those keep tiles (high defense) you should be able to survive the mass of their attacks.

Auxilia spam, and some of them level. Also try to level a Bowman, as that's the unit type you don't get a freebie of.
You might try asking on the IE forums, also.
