Quality of MP players
Hey people,
I've only played a handful of MP games. A couple were really good, but in the rest other players have quit as soon as they're on the back foot (not definitely losing, only 2-5 turns in).
What strategies do others employ to get a decent game?
Cheers

Some games are always obviously n00b games.
-Do not join games with more than 2g/v
-Do not join non-rumble games with less than 60% xp
-Do not join games with custom maps, except if they are obviously good ones
-Do not join games with >150 starting gold
-Do not join games with Superheroes era
-Look at the names. Stupid ones tell that the player is also stupid.
-Avoid too large maps
-Be careful at team games. There are often friends in a team who have forged their super-tactics (very often based on unbalanced eras and maps)
There are also general leavers who are too unmature to abide a defeat or to give up. And those who join, but quickly go away as they see you are a good player, because they just want cowardly defeat newbies.
I hope that helps you a bit.

Default is 2 gold per village now.
Most (if not all) of the maps in the official map pack are built to be played with that setting, but on a larger maps like 50x50 1gpv is better so that the game doesnt take too long, and vice versa, small maps and maps with few villages can be played with 3 gold or even more.

Theoretically, love is great
but it is a little bit different in practice.

This made me laugh, mostly because it is so true. Although, I tend to give strange names to games that I want to play with my neighbor, mostly because I don't want anyone else to join.toms wrote: -Look at the names. Stupid ones tell that the player is also stupid.

A bit... it's more the players than the maps I have a problem with. I could keep track of player names, but then they're so easy to change...toms wrote:There are also general leavers who are too unmature to abide a defeat or to give up. I guess you've played a lot of MP. Do you look at the names of who's in the game? Or just put up with quitters?
I don't have that much time to play, and it's irritating to be just getting into a game and suddenly it's me versus AI again.
It is kinda annoying. I have met serveral players in MP who would only play if they are winning. As soon as I hold off their attack and starting to fight back (sometimes I have to fight many turns trying to survive, re-grab village, etc), they quit, without saying anything.I don't have that much time to play, and it's irritating to be just getting into a game and suddenly it's me versus AI again.
The excuse that they have no time anymore always makes me laugh because it's so riddiculous. Why do they play then? Once a player joined an 1v1 by me, and after seeing I'm no noob, he told he has no time any more, and leaves. But he did not leave the server.

Its ironic I see you hanging around in the MP channel and yet you seem to have problems finding good opponents. if you have a question ask there. Alot of good players stay in there. Really Wesnoth encorages you to develop a social community of players your regularly play with... so to ensure you don't get quitters. Generally I play with the same 20 or so players... who I highly respect. you should read JB's post in this threadbarefootguru wrote: A bit... it's more the players than the maps I have a problem with. Thanks Noy, feel like I'm getting somewhere now.
(A login and password system on the MP server to prevent 'spoofing' comes to mind...)
Yeah, I've been in the MP channel, but not seen how that ties in with the MP server--seems to be a different set of people in each. Are you then hosting your own games (so only your friends can join)? And you don't have a problem with people masquerading as others?Noy wrote:Its ironic I see you hanging around in the MP channel and yet you seem to have problems finding good opponents. if you have a question ask there. Well the Two other devs haven't been on for a little while because of other committments, but when they can they do come on. Most people who come into the channel (with the exception of Xan) are usual players.
I have never once ever seen a person mascarade as another. It doesn't happen. I'm generally open to playing with newer players provided they aren't rude and are willing to listen, and if a spot is open.

It does happen. Maybe it doesnt happen often, but I have noticed someone ( or some people ) using my name on the server in the hours when I usualy am not online ( mornings and early afternoons in europe ), and that happens pretty often latelyNoy wrote:I have never once ever seen a person mascarade as another. Fortunately, they've not cracked my air-tight security system, which is "use a ridiculous name, but talk and play like myself."

We need to confront this fake Mythological and see that his IP is banned.
