Heir to the Throne campaign replay, on hard with no losses

Post by baruk »

I finished this campaign today (using version 1.02), here are the replays as promised. As I predicted, the last two scenarios were very tough, as there are many enemy units with high potential damage, such as lancers and royal guard, that can kill a high hit-point unit in a couple of attacks.

I avoided using the save and reload tactic, but I did have to make multiple attempts on most of the scenarios before I managed a victory without losses.

Luck played a part in my victories, but not to a great extent. Good tactics and careful play were much more important. My inflicted damage was ~5% higher than expected, and my sustained damage was ~2% lower than EV.

I have included a save file of the final turn of the campaign, along with the replays.

Sceptre of Fire seems to be corrupt after turn 7, unfortunately. I might try another no losses attempt at the scenario, so that I can post up a full replay of it.

Woah, you really relied on dishing out that damage! When I played, I ended up with much greater advantage in damage taken than dealt.

On the other hand, that's to be expected on HARD level. There are so many more enemies, you'd need to kill them fast before they wear down your army.
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

You really didn´t squeeze those experiences at Elves Besieged as I did.
I killed:
4 Troll Warriors(quite difficult) using Delfador to weaken them and my marksman to to weaken them further, then I move in with a unit and make the killing blow.
1 Orcish Warlord
3 Orcish Crossbowman(almost costed me Delfador)
1 Orcish Slayer

At the end I leveled up:
Konrad to level 2
2 Fighters to Elvish Captain and Elvish Heroe
2 Archers to Elvish Marksman and Elvish Ranger
1 Shaman to Elvish Druid
The last shaman was killed by Warrior Trolls when failing to entangle them. :P

Is this your average Blackwater Port style of play? Mine is so different, I always thought most of people tried to kill the enemy before the end of turns with less units.
I usually recall my previous units (6, 2 archers, 2 fighters, a shaman and a scout) and recruit one more horseman and a couple of other units. As I don't do any major leveling at Elves Besieged, this and Anduin are my favourite scenarios to do so. I believe that if you try to hold on at the south until the next day you'll probably have a good chance to strike at the rear forcers of the enemy at Blackwater and finish earlier.
Religion is nothing. I'm all about lifestyle. Mine is Christ, and I'll always respect yours.

I'd really like to see a replay of how you pulled that off. I always feel like I should milk that scenario for more, but I never seem to level more than two units or so, with one more usually 3/4 of the way there.

For sure. Of course, there is plenty of "potential" exp out there to be gathered. The trick is to get the right balance of risk and reward.

Looking back at the campaign, pretty much every time I managed a "no losses" victory, I would carry on to the next scenario, this was my primary goal. If I could get some exp and gold to carry with me, then all the better, but I would not keep trying and trying for the perfect completion: maximum exp, gold and no losses to boot, I will leave that as a challenge for someone else.

The exception was my first no losses attempt at Crossroads: I only carried 100 gold to the next scenario, and it did not seem enough (I had decided to kill both leaders for exp, but it took too much time). In my second no losses attempt I went straight for the main leader, and got a decent gold bonus.

This sounds like a high risk tactic. My campaign is more a demonstration of how effective low risk tactics can be. The shaman may have the 70% defence in forest, but it has very little defence against a turn of poor luck, so I try to avoid putting them in danger where possible. :-)

The first rule of the no losses game: above all do not lose a unit.
In practice, this means in my turn, maximum acceptable death risk for my combats is about 5% (in crunch situations only, ideally it is 0%).

For the enemy's turn, I try to minimise the worst case scenario death risk to 10% or less (in practice, this risk can rise to 50% and above). I also use unit baiting tactics to dissuade the AI from following the worst case scenario of combat choices. For example, I place a lower hp unit in the semi-inaccessible part of my line, where only a single unit can attack it. This will tempt in an AI unit, and thus ease the potential pressure on the adjacent hexes in my line (which will each have one less hex of potential attacks). The worst case scenario is invariably the 3 strongest AI units hitting an exposed unit at one of the flanks or a corner of my formation. Ideally you want to encourage as many one to one combats as possible.
Moroder wrote: Is this your average Blackwater Port style of play? Mine is so different, I always thought most of people tried to kill the enemy before the end of turns with less units.
I had several attempts at killing the leader, sometimes I was successful, but I would always lose units in the process. It just so happened that my first no losses success happened using a more defensive tactic. I was happy enough with the replay to carry on the campaign, I knew that more exp was possible, I was just more eager to get to the next scenario than to perfect (expwise) my attempt at the previous one.
I deliberately over-recruited for the scenario. The idea was that I was only going to carry 100 gold to the next scenario, so I might as well spend all of it, stocking up on horseman as they work out cheaper to recall than recruit.

You should really put these onto a chart of some kind. It's such a nuisance to read the whole string of posts.

Presentation is not my strong point. I'll carry on with the stats as they are, till I come up with a better way (perhaps I'll make some kind of summary at the end). Suggestions are welcome.

I've finished HttT without losses as well with version 1.1.5 though.

There are several differences in how the campaign plays now, some make it harder others easier. Unfortunately not all replays work flawlessly since the replay/save functionality still has several bugs. One I tried to avoid but didn't always is that the replay gets corrupted when you undo a recall which I usually do frequently when making up the initial strategy. (this should be fixed in 1.1.6 which is incidentally released today, so maybe you can successfully watch those replays with the new version)

Anyway see for yourself if you like, attached are the replays. :)
