Post by Appleman1234 »

Hi everyone,
I am going to make a faction that features rats and mice.
I have already made a rough first version of the units list.
I haven't done any artwork yet, I can do some, but I am not an expert in artwork creation. (ie I can make pictures, I can make pretty pictures, but my list of masterpieces is 0.)

There are general things about this faction that were not included in the unit list, but will be mentioned after it.

I look forward to your opinions, constructive criticism and advice.

Unit list finishes here.

The Unit tree is shown below:
0 Baby Mouse

! Mousling branch
# Ratling branch
@ Wise Mousling branch

Notes:
The race's main strength is their ranged ability, which makes there melee their main weakness. Ratlings gain speed and chaotic nature but lose HP.

I attempted to balance this faction the best I could for a first revision and I am welcome to any advice.

I have the faction's terrain movement and resistance currently residing in my head and will attempt to put it to paper when I can.

As for why mice, well I examined numerous other factions before I started on this one. I found that lots of them were elf or human related that had been split from there brethren at one stage.

So I decided to take the road less travelled.

Hope this helps

I suggest you just make any pictures. They can be later replaced with better pictures; but it is easier to play with less good pictures than without any.

Also what are your plans what to do with this faction? Do you want to make a campaign? (Because that is probably the only thing you can do with a new faction.)

Hi everyone,

I am making the first picture (Mousling) now.
I will eventually make a campaign or two related to this faction.
I would like this faction eventually to become playable and balanced in order to play as a multiplayer faction. I will also eventually make an era to go with this faction.

Also some of the unit names are quitle plain and simple and any suggestions or improvements are welcome.

How is it possible to have a mouse and an ogre (or troll or yeti) in the same scale?
:?

WINR

call them Skavens--stereotypical rat group name.

Call them Ratmen. In addition to being a lot more obvious, it's a tribute to the old and very good game, Majesty.

I prefer the term Ratkin (i must admit i also liked the term Vermyn).

I still want some rodent-based faction to replace the Outlaws in the Knalgtan Alliance as per my kobold suggestion.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the faction names, they are lot better better than Cellarmice, so I might change the faction name. Ratkin, Vermyn, Ratmen, Skaven are all such good names, I can't decide yet.

Don't forget master Splinter! Cool
Is this a joke or serious ?, I could make a Master Splinter unit as a one off, but he certainly wouldn't fit in to the faction unit tree.

Thanks Darth Fool, for the link into that discussion, it raised many valid and interesting ideas.

Reply to toms: They are mouselike, so they don't really have the height of mice. There height is just less than the average human. (Key idea, mouselike, mouse based, not mouse sized).

If you were going to use any units of this faction to replace Outlaws, you could use the Ratling Branch with an addition or two.

Thanks for your opinions and ideas so far.

As aforementioned the artwork that I make will take time and be basic and I would appreciate any assistance with this.

To give some background information to this faction,
This faction resides on either a secluded part of Wesnoth (a small valley) or on an medium sized island kingdom between the Great Contient and Wesnoth.

There are two sides to this faction: Mousling side who are proud, hounorable, live by day and are generally not interested in fighting unless they have to.

Ratling side who are nocturnal, very shady characthers who like sneaking up on things and causing general trouble.

Is the number of units ok or should I add more ?

Hi everyone, just adding the first piece of artwork now, It's the mousling standing, it isn't tested or finished and I will continue to work on it. (As you can see it still has template marks around it.)

Hi everyone,

Is that another joke ??, and if so am I supposed to take it positively or negatively ? :?

I already said that I am not as good as most of the other Wesnoth artists.

Anyhow the Mousling isn't supposed to be scary, that job is filled by the Ratling line, (which I am making the standing picture for now).

My plan is to complete all the standing unit art and then create the unit cfgs, then the faction cfgs, the era cfgs and finally add the animations.

However everything in the plan is flexible and any ideas or opinions are welcome. I would appreciate any help especially with the improvement and creation of the artwork.

If I were you I'd try to make all the cfg files and wait until artists become less busy (they are quite busy, now, in fact).
