Gentes Orcorum (Roman gladiator-type Orcs)

Definitely not good enough, IMHO...
Perhaps, for the gladiator weapons and armor, you could rip some stuff from the Lavinians?

I think it's because the helmet is so much lighter-colored than the rest of his armor. Aside from that, it looks like something we could use for the Dimacherius, the gladiator with two swords -- well, if the helmet were adjusted to look more Roman.Ryorin wrote:I read the posts to this topic. And then I quickly editted a previous made Orc, I simply added a helmet to him. His helmet turned out ackward, but I don't know why.

Re: Arena Orcs (Roman gladiator-type Orcs)
We still have not answered the question as to whether a chariot-riding line could branch off the Goblin Latronis. The trade-off between these two branches could be greater speed for the Essedarius and greater versatility for the Venator.
Of course, it would also increase the size of the faction to 27 units. Still, a diverse array of units would fit the faction well. Remember, these guys were trained to fight for entertainment, not for practical purposes, and variety would spice up the show....
As for art-related concerns, I think the already small size of the goblins would help with this, especially if the chariot were to be pulled by something other than a full-size horse. How about if the Goblin Essedarius rides in a fox-drawn chariot?

So, I ask again, is it a good idea to have the Essedarius branch off the Latronis?

As long as the Essedari are using bows, i don't think it would be so far fetched having them being pulled by some small animals, or maybe just leave it at an animal mount.
It even seems fun in the roman way, looking at a mounted goblin or being pulled by a small animal, trying to evade and hunt down some big beasts, hoping one doesn't pounce him and make him fall to his mostly sure death.
Oh yeah...
HAIL TEMUCHIN.

All these roman names... I have no idea what you're talking about...
Anyway, I'm doing the Aiyira now, right? Do we have a set tree for them yet?
And, could Temuchin get to stats for the Kedari?
Oh, I've thought of a backstory for the Kedari. Are you familiar with the story of Saving Elensefar? The undead and wesfolk under Ah-Reblak could have traveled down the Great River and reached the Eastern Desert, where they founded a country and evolved into the Kedari.

Yeah, the more precise descriptions of these guys are on the previous pages.turin wrote:All these roman names... I have no idea what you're talking about...
Check out my latest post in the Airiya thread, in which I modify Cuyo Quiz's latest suggestion and ask one final question: "Should the Kardakes line be kept or dropped?"turin wrote:Anyway, I'm doing the Aiyira now, right? Do we have a set tree for them yet?
I've taken my finals, graded my students' 31 exams, covered some other stuff -- I should be able to get to them tomorrow or the next day.turin wrote:And, could Temuchin get to stats for the Kedari?
Well, it sounds like a perfectly good story, but which multiplayer era would the Kedari be placed in? I always pictured them in the Imperial Era, but this would seem to preclude that.turin wrote:Oh, I've thought of a backstory for the Kedari. Are you familiar with the story of Saving Elensefar? Well, someone has to go in the Eastern desert (since that is where Ravanal, in EI, hails from.) If not the Kedari, who? Perhaps the Aiyira?Temuchin Khan wrote:Well, it sounds like a perfectly good story, but which multiplayer era would the Kedari be placed in? The Kedari would be the best candidates, no doubt. Besides, I want the Airiya to fight the Lavinians and the Dardans!turin wrote:Well, someone has to go in the Eastern desert (since that is where Ravanal, in EI, hails from.) If not the Kedari, who? So feel free to put the Kedari in the Eastern Desert. Only question is, as I mentioned earlier, which multiplayer era would they end up in?
EDIT: I keep meaning to mention this, but I keep forgetting: How about if, instead of "Arena Orcs", our Orcish gladiators are called "Orci Fulgorum"?

Gladiatores Orcorum
Some other ideas:Temuchin Khan wrote:I keep meaning to mention this, but I keep forgetting: How about if, instead of "Arena Orcs", our Orcish gladiators are called "Orci Fulgorum"?
Res Orcorum ("things from Orcus")
Gladiatores Orcorum ("gladiators from Orcus")
We could say that Orcus (a Latin word for "netherworld") is the name of the homeland of the Orcs.
I would prefer either of these names to "Arena Orcs" and "Orci Fulgorum" and my other suggestions, but I guess "Gladiatores Orcorum" would make the most sense.

Re: Gladiatores Orcorum
No one responded to this, but it's just as well. I have, however, decided on a permanent name for this faction: Gens Orcorum.Temuchin Khan wrote:Some other ideas:Temuchin Khan wrote:I keep meaning to mention this, but I keep forgetting: How about if, instead of "Arena Orcs", our Orcish gladiators are called "Orci Fulgorum"?

Also, I have worked up preliminary stats for these Roman-gladiator Orcs, but I haven't put them into cfg form yet. I have not completed the stats for the Dardanoi.

Re: Gladiatores Orcorum
"Gens" is singular.
"Gentes Orcorum" would be the proper form, and that will be the name for this faction.
I have the tree and the stats (though I haven't posted them yet) all worked out, so I think I've done all I can for these guys, short of artwork.

Re: Arena Orcs (Roman gladiator-type Orcs)
Man, this thread has become a one-man show.
Anyway, I'm starting to think that I should cap all the units at level two. After all, the Romans wanted a SHOW, with BLOOD, they didn't want the combat to be prolonged as much as possible. Seeing whether a given gladiator faced death with honor and courage was a big part of the attraction.
Besides, a faction with no level three options but a vast array of level two options would be a unique twist.
Besides, this cuts the overall number of units for which we need art to 17.
Also, I changed the net and lasso back to ranged weapons
Well, I'm willing to consider that tree final. Any objections?
And any artists available for the job?

Code: Select all
Orcish Pugnator -- unarmored; club (high damage, low reps) & whip (melee impact, low damage, high reps)
-> Orcish Paegniarius -- whip (gains marksman) & club; gains shield (strapped to arm)
-> Orcish Bestiarius -- unarmored; whip (gains marksman) & spear, loses club
Orcish Gallus -- longsword, helmet, no shield
-> Orcish Murmillo -- longsword (high damage, low reps), helmet with face guard, shield, gains charge (blade)
-> Orcish Provocator -- longsword (gains marksman), breastplate, helmet, shield
-> Orcish Dimacherius -- two swords (high damage, high reps), but low resistances, no helmet, no shield, no armor
Orcish Samnis -- short sword (low damage, high reps), helmet, shield
-> Orcish Hoplomachus -- short sword, breastplate, helmet, shield, gets better resistances, gains spear
-> Orcish Secutor -- short sword (gains marksman), helmet with face guard, shield
-> Orcish Thraex -- sickle-sword (medium reps, medium damage), helmet, shield; no special abilities or additional armor, but greater speed.
Goblin Piscator -- unarmored; net (ranged impact, slow, low damage, high reps) & trident; scout line
-> Goblin Retiarius -- gains dagger (low damage, low reps) and shoulder guard, gains skirmisher; otherwise like Piscator
-> Goblin Laquerius -- has lasso (ranged impact, slow, low damage, high reps) rather than net, has lance (firststrike) rather than trident, unarmored
Goblin Latronis -> Goblin Venator -- archer line
-> Goblin Essedarius -- archer in fox-drawn chariot; faster, but not as good on defense
And any artists available for the job?

Lots of melee marksman. I like it. Something I've been thinking of applying in faction designs, when I get back to it. (Currently working on Spacenoth.)
So you are going with the chariot? should be interesting. Can't wait to see the art for these guys...
I have no objections, but then, it's not going in my era.
