1. dwarves. resistance to all, including fire and cold..... yeah. It took me forever to find a way to fight them.
2. Loyalists. CLose tie with the elves. In my opinion this is the most flexible faction by far. Heavy infantry are brutal when used right, they have a scout unit that is effective in combat, The horseman can slaughter and enemy leader single handedly in multiplayer, (I have nearly won against elf players by attacking their leader with one.)
3. Elves. All units have a ranged attack, a very fast scout unit, and a good defense in forests. Very strong in the forest, but easy to kill anywhere else with their low hp. high number of low damage melle attacks lets them wolf pack high level enemys effectively, like duelists and maulers.
4. Drakes. High mobility, a resistance to blade, but easy to hit and weak to pierce. They are highly effective when played right, but Few can play them right.
5.Northerners. the orcs suffer from being powerful on the offensive at night but weak when defending and a lack of units that are effective against mounted eneimes. Despite this, they aren't weak and they would be rated higher than this, but too many people play them badly. by example, attacking my level 2 swordsmen and pikemen from water while I'm in forests and moutains using trolls.
6. Undead. Often badly played, and I think thye are somewhat underpowered. THough in age of heroes with several hundred gold this isn't true. They are just as likely to win as any against some factions, and can be a difficult opponent, but other factions slaughter them.

Oh no look out its a ray gun.
You should move to avoid the rays
the rays are coming out of the gun
if you are hit by the rays
you will be shot by the rays
the rays are fast so you should be fast to
can you win against the fast rays from the gun?

I always use northerners. I think they could use a L1 grunt variation that can resist blows a little better.
Hope springs eternal.

I find elves and dwarves the easier to play: beeing neutral are less influenced by day time, elves are fast, which always is good, but dwarves are resilient, and that compensates. Both has prefered terrain, but then other races/units have terrain problems too.
Dwarves alone are too slow, but with either gryphons or footpads they do very well.
Most elf units are almost as good at melee as at ranged attack, including scouts that I think that can fight quite well, so you can almost randomly choose between fighters and archers if you don't know what lies ahead. Only thing I missed in elves was a crunching attack against skeletons, but now with the wose is almost too easy ... ok they are slow and you can run away, but you don't win only running away.
Loyalists and undead have the added difficulty of very specialized units which great strengths and great weakneses that must support each other, and timing for attacks and retreats is also very important, making things more complicated and to me far more interesting.
I think northerns are more difficult than elves because of the nighty timing thing and small number of ranged attacks, but I've not enough experience to say whether they are really weaker, after I improve my use of undead I'll give them a try.
I also lack experience with drakes, but don't seem too difficult to use as you have great movility and both day and night units. Again, as with dwarves and elfs, some terrains do favour them alot.
I think that terrain type is more important to optimize race choice than knowing the enemy faction.

but not all [sry for my englisch..]
Against elves? Undead and drakes.
Against Undead?? Drakes loyalists elves.
1.notherners
2.loyalist, knalgans
3.elves, drakes
4. undead
though it doesn't mean for example northener will beat drake, just a relative indication of power and versatality in most map.
anyway, whoever rank northeners as the last race must be playing age of heroes alot

Because you either love / hate them don't / know how to use them.Elvish Pillager wrote:hey, why does everyone put Northerners at the top or bottom?
Change in order for me:
1+2) Northerners / Rebels
I've found that poison and cheap heavy night hitters are awesome. The naga is also incredible for the Northerners.
The most versatile, the Rebels are still the hardest to hit on most maps. They give the Northerners a run for their money.
3) Dwarves (I'd say Knalgan but I always think I'm misspelling it)
I've found that in larger maps this faction must rely on their less resistant units for speed. This allows more opportunities for their enemies to counter. In smaller maps, however, Dwarves might be #1.
4) Loyalists
Almost TOO versatile, each specific unit has a strength and a weakness which leads to unit specific countering. Their horsemen are gods at day and, although I rank them 4th, they are quite good.
5) Undead
I still haven't mastered these guys yet, but the secret seems to be in the adepts. Ghosts, if you can level them, prove to be invaluable. Magic counters this faction too easily, however.
6) Drakes
Although they are very mobile, the drakes don't avoid attacks well and are susceptible to pierce i.e. archers, spearmen, the likes. The saurians make this faction fun to play, but perhaps they are the weakest.
That's a pretty drastic swing for just a few days time, but I'm beginning to see the powers of the different races and am constantly reevaluating the balance.
Expect to se more swings in the future as I get better using each race. =)
They all seem rather close - a lot closer than I imagined when I first posted!

I just love it when new players assume to know better than everyone else.use less wrote:I just love it when people underestimate the power of the undead.
(Most of us have already been through that phase.)
I hope to see you on the server some time. You can play Undead, and you can choose my faction. Not trying to sound arrogant, but I do think some anti-undead education would do you good.

And I just love it when people judge by the number of the posts or date registration. So cute.Doc Paterson wrote:I just love it when new players assume to know better than everyone else.use less wrote:I just love it when people underestimate the power of the undead.

I'm looking forward meeting you and all of those i-know-how-to-beat-ya-n00b players.
