Maybe it's just me, but it seems odd for him to put down the spear, then put his arms up in defense. Wouldn't he just try to block with the spear?

Because it's stuck in the ground. Defence isn't necessarily trying to block, it's 'prepare to get hit' and 'actually get hit'. To my mind on some units, it's more of a reaction to the fight than actually defending.

You'll see him defend with a spear when he's in melee, at the moment he's only animated for ranged combat i.e avoiding arrows/ throwing knifes and the like.
That said, I'll start the Hunter's melee animations, and dissect artisticdude's Merman warrior for reference. What do you think to using a similar idea for melee, i.e sheathe/unsheathe that will place his weapon in a ready stance like those of the warrior line, rather than see him place his hands on his hips after every strike? A bit of extra work, but I think it will be worth it.

That could work, but it's probably easier just to move from the base frame to the attack without an animation, simply for ease of use.

Congrats on the new title, Trilby! It's certainly well deserved. =)
I'm glad to have someone collaborating with me on the merfolk animations. I look forward to seeing what you come up with next.

Love this stuff, the movements are nicely exaggerated, something I could learn from.
Sometimes we must be hurt in order to grow, fail in order to know, lose in order to gain, and sometimes we must have to be broken so we can be whole again...

I'm not entirely certain how to respond, hence my hesitation, but... Thank you. A pep-talk, right there!
...And of course, you're welcome.
