Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
Whilst that might be a useful effect =D given the nature of the ruby's influence on its holders, it should probably be vaoided. BUt that shouldn't be too hard - simply merge the top two 'flames' into one.

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
Hehe, or don't take away the middle one that was there from the beginning. I just wanted to try to get away from the 'seven flames' thingy.
The stud was just a test to see if I could adjust the ruby to make it easier to follow for the flames. Bad idea and excecution, but I left it there anyway...
Other than that I think that I failed miserably to achieve what I wanted: to show that it is possible to make a more lively fire and getting out of the circle. Here is another shot at that, without the two above problems.

I'd prefer fewer flames personally; 5 rather than 7. The current setup reminds me of a gas burner; it's too ... mechanical.

How bout something like this? It's not vector, but vectorised, it might do the trick.

Those flames feel a little thick to me, but what if we were to have them just the outline (fairly thick, obviously)? Something like this:

NO, i think they need to be solid, but certainly they could be thinner.

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
Mostly I think the solid version is better, because in most cases the flames will not be rendered in black, but in something lighter, gold or orange/yellow. What needs to change though is the small space between the flame and the ruby. The flame isn't a part of the ruby as such, it's an extension of it that specifies it as the ruby of fire. The ruby itself must stand out as the primary focal point, and to accomplish that it needs some elbow room around it.
But otherwise it looks pretty nice.

How about a single flame above the ruby, with negative rays of light from the gem cutting through the flame? That might make it seem like the ruby is extraordinary rather than simply on fire.

As i said before, i'm not happy with the shape of the gemstone. So here is a ruby-like design, as i had it in mind, we could think about. No corona at the moment. The idea is, having the flames inside the gem. But doning this, means losing the round look of the gem. The perfekt stone should fit with the roundness of the rod and should have the flame inside.

that picture has no balance.musketaquid wrote:As i said before, i'm not happy with the shape of the gemstone. So here is a ruby-like design, as i had it in mind, we could think about. Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
The othewr issue is that the ruby doesn't seem to be connected to the staff. It's an issue with the newer designs by Groovy as well. With the hexagonal design, the ruby seems to sit in a socket on the staff head, which works well.

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
I have actually considered the flame inside the ruby myself already and rejected it for various reasons. One is that the flame is just plain too small, the sigil must be usable in very small sizes as well. Second reason is that a flame around the ruby looks more powerful than one contained within it. The ruby works by projecting fire, so an external flame looks more natural. The third reason is that an aura/corona or a "crown of flames" adds an important "holy" or "royal" element to the sigil.

You are right, due to the gems flat look.JW wrote:that picture has no balance.
If the inside flame has already been considered thus, i throw away my approach! And you better move on with the diamond-like shape with the outside flame. It's not bad. The point, that a corona gives the impression of a crown, is obvious, and i appreciate this design.Sgt. Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
since all the concepts are scattered across this thread i collected them (i hope i didn't miss important ones) and put them on a sheet together to have a better basis to compare their advantages and disadvantages:
2: flames are not iconic enough, but very clear readable
3: old eye problem
4: works well, the flames meet nicely with the ruby
5: clearly readable but the flames are very seperated from the rest of the sceptre
6: nice like 4, but even more fiery
7: very heavy and the small version shows that the flame is tooo near to the ruby
8: very royal. the flames appear more important than the sceptre
9: flames are way too small. not very gem like, looks like a simple rectangle.

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
I'm warming a lot to #8, actually. It looks a little more iconic than the others - like an emblem that's evolved over many years rather than just a picture of a sceptre.
But we could use a number of slightly different variations, of course.
