Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
@Woodwizzle ... uh, there are two types of alternative t's... which do you dig?

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
I dig the Carolingian ones. The other ts are nice, but have much less character.
Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
The comparison has altered my thoughts:
IMHO, they both look fine.

Here's a complete small case alphabet plus some variations and ligatures. These are form variation, as I'm not sure yet which I like best, the width variations will be more alike.

MMMMMMM! I forget - are these becoming a font?
Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
Looking very nice. So once your font is completed, are you going to release it as a resource for add on creators and such?

Yes, I'm going to put them into a font file as well.

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
it looks quite professional, i'd love to see manuscripts inked with that font.
many of the character names have apostrophes or hyphens, how will you handle those along with the ligatures and kernings here?

I believe the font is meant only for the title screen/game logo.tr0ll wrote:many of the character names have apostrophes or hyphens, how will you handle those along with the ligatures and kernings here?
Still, I think that some languages might require diacritics even only for their version of "The Battle of Wesnoth" text.

Diacritics will be also added later, most likely Cyrillic and Greek letters too.

A complete font!
Sounds very cool, i have a feeling that would find use and spread far beyond wesnoth alone.

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
For information: the font will, in time, include all the necessary glyphs for the different localisations (on the latin-cyrillic axis) and medieval stuff like long s, ligatures like st, ct, ch etc. I will later open a different thread for the font discussion.
Right now I'm concentrating on getting the English version settled. Here's a "single story" variant of a and variants of q and g based on the same body, plus variant y based on the same descender as that of the g. I like the visual consistency (though I like the more whimsical earlier y as well )

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
This one's difficult for me to comment, as I once again find myself short of the appropriate vocabulary.
Altogether, this sub-set offers more consistency than the same letters in your earlier example. However, it lost some of the roundness that I enjoyed in the earlier set. I think this is due to the addition of angles where the earlier set had nice round curves. For an example:
- new bottom line, which introduces a sharp angle at the bottom left corner of each letter.
- the new descender, which I feel also adds rigidity to the letters, bringing them closer to usual blackletter fonts (which I find less interesting than the earlier, but that's only my personnal taste). It's overall shape is fine, but maybe loosening slightly the angles into curves would help.
Last, the letter "y" : I did prefer the earlier version, at least its right side, once again because of the roundness.
I hope this helps.

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
The style is supposed to show both roundness and pointyness, and the latest variants probably do skew the balance toward the pointyness (the harpoon-like terminals of the descenders might contribute to the aggressiveness somewhat).
The basic design principle is to have round sides and pointy top and bottom (demonstrated in most simple terms by the letter o). Here's another variant of g, maybe more faithful to the original intent (the y doesn't work that well with this kind of descender, though).
Here's a very sketchy preview of some of the capitals I've been working on. They're supposed to look fancy, yet simple and fairly calligraphic.
