Working from Scratch

Post by Sangel »

All my graphics work so far has been pretty much based around reworking currently present units - admittedly to the point where the original is completely lost, in a few cases, but still a process of progressive modification rather than true creation. So, I thought I'd try my hand at actually creating a unit from scratch.

I figured I'd start with something small and simple. Here's my concept of what Li'sar would've looked a bit like before she trained to become a lethal swordsmaster.

Nice, but she seems a bit small. Perhaps she could be a few pixels bigger? I have to squint to see her face.

Small? She's tiny. ;)

Here's a version with a slighter larger head, though.

She could be the wife of a framer for Cedric campaign. Give her a sickle and she will be perfect.
Also, I had been thinking about a scenario were you have to save and cover non-fighting units during an invasion. The gold bonus will be on the number you bring to safety while the enemy get a bonus for the number killed/captured. I won't be doing such scenario for a long while, so anybody is free to use this idea.

Maybe one of those old cast-iron frying pans. I'm thinking major impact damage....

How?

all other leaders are 3rd level, and it makes little sense to recruit princesses, since they are so rare...

"Alas, we need a princess to continue the royal succession, and there are none remaining in all of Wesnoth!"
"So? Just recruit one."
"Oh yeah..."

Personally, I wouldn't picture this girl as a farmer's wife. A farmer's daughter, perhaps, but not a farmer's wife.

This is more like a farmer's wife.

Pick a light source man :-)
up rigth are used in all wesnoth units (well at least when they look right) after that you could add shadows and hightlists and achieve a more "volume-feeling"

I know what you mean - most of the model has no problem with that, but the dress is has a "flat" look. I was trying to make her appear to be wearing white, which is very difficult to add volume to. Perhaps I should make her dressed in light blue and add more volume to the dress in that way?

Surely more definite lightsource would help but if she is standing in the daylight she shouldn't have many deep shadows :)

I would make her more contrasted and maybe AA her a bit, mainly hair. Also you can try to define her shapes more, like her feet.

But all in all it is a great and neat sprite, well done.
