A Song of Fire: SP Campaign Feedback and Reviews

Post by revansurik »

At long last, after burning half my brain with solving coding problems, I have finally finished the first part of my campaign, A Song of Fire. It is placed in the central-eastern regions of the Great Continent, centuries before Haldric's time.
Please provide the feedback by answering these questions:

1.What version of Wesnoth have you used to play this campaign?
2.How do you rate the difficulty of this campaign in general?(1-10)
3.Which portions of the campaign do you find to be too easy or too hard that may need to be rebalanced?
4.How do you find the storyline and the conversation of the campaign? Also, were there many grammar mistakes (I'm not a native English-speaker, so I may have commited some mistakes)
5.What changes do you think may be made to make the campaign more interesting?
6.If you know about Wesnoth Markup Language(WML),please comment on the WML of the various scenarios, stating how they may be improved.

Additionally, I'm also searching for artists willing to make portraits for the heroes or sprites for the custom characters; I had to borrow portraits from other campaigns, and frankestein some sprites, since I'm not a good artists.
And additionally, if I forgot to mention anything in the credits (regarding the use of user-made music and using portraits from other campaigns) please tell me.

Thanks in advance for playing my campaign!

okay it seems to be a 1.11 only campaign. i loaded version 1.11.1 and started on Medium.

* needs dependency key for Era of Myths http://wiki.wesnoth.org/PblWML#Dependency_Key_Example
* when i recruited a unicorn i got this message, could be an Era problem:
Invalid WML found: Descriptions should no longer include the name as the first line. (5)
* saw these messages when Myra was healing some units
20130119 16:46:12 warning unit: Unknown attribute 'image_moving' discarded.
20130119 16:46:12 warning unit: Unknown attribute 'image_healing' discarded.
*in the second scenario, Veela mentions some dwarves and trolls but the screen pans back too quickly for me to see them.

also, i wonder if feedback and reviews should go in the Add-on Feedback forum (i guess a moderator could move this topic if needed)

(more feedback coming as i try this :) )

Hello, I have played up to Council with the King and I am enjoying the campaign.
1.What version of Wesnoth have you used to play this campaign?
Wesnoth 1.11.1
2.How do you rate the difficulty of this campaign in general?(1-10)
I'm in Normal Difficulty and the only level I found to be enough of a challenge was Lighting Strike. So, my rating is just a 5.
3.Which portions of the campaign do you find to be too easy or too hard that may need to be rebalanced?
The unit balances should be revised. The elemental units here have varying stats from the one which is most played, which made things very difficult for me (as I have played the faction from my era and that of Era of Chaos, which were edited in number of ways.)
4.How do you find the storyline and the conversation of the campaign? Also, were there many grammar mistakes (I'm not a native English-speaker, so I may have commited some mistakes)
Nah, I see no mistakes thus far.
5.What changes do you think may be made to make the campaign more interesting?
Give Dwarvish Guardsmen as recruits. I want to skewer drakes!
6.If you know about Wesnoth Markup Language(WML),please comment on the WML of the various scenarios, stating how they may be improved.
WML is good as it is. No improvements needed.

I see that your campaign uses Aragwaithi, Elementals, and Windsong units and some music files which are from the UMC Music add-on. To reduce add-on size, and for quicker uploads, I recommend using War of Legends and UMC Music as dependencies instead. (If you are considering to use War of Legends as a dependency, please PM me. I have made a significant number of edits including unit ID changes.)

I will provide more feedback once I have finished the rest.

THanks for the feedback! :-D

I could swear I had placed that dependency key; i must correct it for next version  But I'm sure I have warned in the campaign's description that the Era of Myths was needed. As for this invalid WML problem, yes, it seems to be a problem of the era, and will also appear when you see the Nature Weaver profile, since I created it directly out of a Windsong Weaver, but that doesn't prevent gameplay, does it? ;-)
saw these messages when Myra was healing some units
20130119 16:46:12 warning unit: Unknown attribute 'image_moving' discarded.

This message is weird... It didn't appear to me when I was playing the campaign, but I'll see what that could be :hmm:
The dwarves and trolls are in the middle of the map; I just scroll to the drakes in the upper side of the map, but maybe I should add a longer delay for the player to see who their enemy is...
And the feedback... Well, I saw lots of topics in this forum about user-made campaigns AND feedback and reviews for them, so I thought this was the right place for that...
I'm in Normal Difficulty and the only level I found to be enough of a challenge was Lighting Strike. So, my rating is just a 5.
That would make the campaign a Beginner/Intermediate level, I suppose?
PS: Play scenario 10, The Wilderness, especially on Hard; that might be enough of a challenge for you :-P
Give Dwarvish Guardsmen as recruits. I want to skewer drakes!
Well, I was going to use them instead of Dwarvish Soldiers, but I thought the latter would be more effective (I've never used guardsmen as anything other than cannonfodder  ); keep in mind that Myra's dwarvish recruits are just an escort troop sent by Auroghar, not a true army, and for this reason I didn't give all dwarvish units as choices for recruiting (and also because it is not a dwarvish campaign, and so I didn't want the player to fall into temptation and recruit lots of Thunderers to use against drakes :-D
The unit balances should be revised. The elemental units here have varying stats from the one which is most played, which made things very difficult for me (as I have played the faction from my era and that of Era of Chaos, which were edited in number of ways.)
I was indeed going to use War of Legends, but in the end I chose Era of Myths for two reasons: first, EoM has some factions that will be important in later parts of my campaign (now I don't remember whether Celestials are in WoL?); and second, WoL has no Windsong Harbinger, and that will be a problem when a Windsong Heretic joins Myra's group. I also thought of using an UMC Music Pack as dependency, but, since I wasn't going to use all musics in a pack, I thought it better to place the few songs I used in the campaign's folder. Problem is, the few songs I used are an average 6,5 Mb :-P But I will see how I may reduce to campaign's size...

Okay I have played part1 of A Song of Fire on Normal.

Now, feedback on the rest:

Rise of the Dragons:

Good level, but one thing bothers me. I killed off Assix with a Dwarven Lord, so how did he manage to ambush in Legend of the Water Dragon.

Bitter Return

Nothing much to say about this level, but the undead were just wimps :augh: . Took them out with Ravyan and Animated Rocks. Make Undead a bit more powerful.

The Wilderness
PS: Play scenario 10, The Wilderness, especially on Hard; that might be enough of a challenge for you
Nothing is a challenge when one has Dwarven Lords as recalls. :lol2: Dwarven Lords are powerful units, and ones which Ogres and Dire Wolves prefer to avoid. But, I did have a bit of trouble in keeping wolves away from units which had trouble defending themselves. A Dire Wolf and a bunch scorpions that was only half a kill away from leveling. Also found trouble finding the entrance, which very well hidden.

Legend of the Water Dragon

Had to play this one with quite a few restarts. Took wrong turns and got served by Troll Shamans. They just ate Stone Titans :augh:!

Burning Revenge

Nothing to much say here, but skewering Drakes with Aragwaithi Spearmen or showering them with arrows from Archers.

Twilight of the Kingdoms

This was time consuming and a pain in the ***. Wortless Allies. They just committed suicide. The enemy Fire Drakes 'bullied' my Dwarven Lords. Arbiters impaler weak Spearmen and Archers. But, I conquered their last wave!

The Sky Dragon Descends

I have a complaint against the Elves. They just fed themselves to Side 8. Side 5 was doing good killing Saurians. Elven Lord committed suicide, but grievously injured a Fire Dragon. I was this close to killing side 6 Dragon when my army vanished.

The last part of the level was just annoying :augh: . The Sky Dragon just killed the nearest Drake while the rest of the dumb drakes just surrounding Maat. Took a while to kill the Dragon.

Farewell

Sending a strong wave near the eastern edge of the forest would have been better. But, my Dwarven Lords enjoyed killing drakes and saurians.

Anyways, nice campaign. Overall Rating 8.5 out of 10. That' s really good in my record.
Problem is, the few songs I used are an average 6,5 Mb But I will see how I may reduce to campaign's size...
Well, there was a simple solution to this. You could just copied the file of the Harbringer, Librarian and Farstrider (lvl 3 Windsong pathfinder) and could used this instead:

In the Harbringer's unit file, add this:

Code: Select all

[advancefrom]
     unit="Windsong Heretic"
     experience=70
[/advancefrom]
And the Librarian's:

Code: Select all

[advancefrom]
     unit="Windsong Arbiter"
     experience=170
[/advancefrom]
And the Farstrider's:

Code: Select all

[advancefrom]
     unit="Windsong Pathfinder"
     experience=68
[/advancefrom]
This would allow the advancements again. I didn't include those units caused they lacked their own graphics, and were easily mixed up.

Another alternate solution was to PM me about the era's problem. I would have gladly 're-added 'the removed units. (My previous sentence was a bit weird :hmm: )

8,5/10, I think it's really good for a first campaign! Thanks very much for playing! :-D

About the scenarios...
Rise of the Dragons - The thing is, Assix shouldn't be killed in this scenario. I too managed to kill him when I re-played my campaign recently, and I shall correct this for the next version, like make him flee when attacked.

Bitter Return - Yes, I noticed that during re-play too. I made the saurian recruit only level 1 undead for a reason: the saurian mages have just learned necromancy, and so can't create powerful undead - only Assix, who's a formidable saurian sorcerer, can do that. I think I shall give him more gold and a higher income...

The Wilderness - Funny, I thought the scorpions were the most annoying; maybe because I tend to recruit wind and rock elementals, whose impact attacks are useless against scorpions :-P Also, let me ask you, did Krinex (the saurian enemy in this scenario) got killed by the wild beasts? In my plays he always got killed before I even spotted him, even though I programmed the wild beasts' AI to avoid Krinex's camp...

LEgend of the Water Dragon - Yep, I know :-P

Burning Revenge - On the other hand, the Aragwaithi's low hitpoints make them quite vulnerable to the drakes. When I played it, it was quite a bloody battle, with many losses on both sides. Again, it was intentional

Twilight of the Kingdoms - Maybe I should make the allies more defensive... :hmm: But when fighting them, did you leave the city walls and go for the enemy camp, or did you do as I hinted and defended yourself from the walls? :-P

The Sky Dragon Descends - Again, maybe I should improve the elves' AI; the trolls seem to be good defending the western walls. As for the Sky Dragon's behaviour, it is weird, since I programmed him to target Maat; but I really intended their battle to be chaotic and violent, with both contenders hacking through the battlefield, smitting the puny level 3 drakes to meet each other

Farewell - Um, well thought... Well thought...

Well, I'll wait for a few more feedbacks before releasing the next version; meanwhile, I'm working on part 2.
PS.: I'm having a hard time making sprites for a new faction I'll need for the next 2 parts, if there is any good soul around with enough free time and willingness to help me with them... :-P

EDIT: About the Harbinger: Yes, I think I'll do that... War of Legends has better elementals, and also the minoaurs, which I have just included in future scenarios. Now the problem is, WoL doesn't has Celestials, which is a key faction in part 3, and no devlings, which will also appear in parts 2 and 3 - but I may replace them with other punching bags  I just wonder whether I could just add the Celestials to the campaign's folder, like I did with the Aragwaithi... :hmm:

Aahh, I know what it is: I forgot to change the recruit list for Myra in scenario 06 - Council With The King - At the Palace's Garden. The recruit list there counted with Era of Myths units, I forgot to change that, really sorry
But I have just uploaded a corrected version; download it and replay scenario 06 from the start, the error should disappear.

I stayed within the walls. Drakes foolishly attacked dwarven lords and got a whopping by battle-axes :lol2:

Version 0.2.1 is out, with the whole Part II: Towards the Rising Sun done!

"Part II: Towards the Rising Sun - After the vicious Last War, Myra has become the new leader of Aragwaithi and Windsong alike. Albeit young and shaken by many losses, she must steel herself to lead her people through the vast and hostile Hannuk Steppes. However, her journey will take them all farther than in their wildest dreams. Furthermore, Myra must deal with the evil influence of the mysterious red gem she found after the last battle."

Changelog:

Code: Select all

Version 0.2.1:
-------------------

- Added the option of controlling allies in some scenarios

- Units:
    - Included Celestials, Wargs and a brand new faction, the Hannuks;
    - Added some new units: Saurian Lich, Mermaid Naiad, Dragon Sorceress and Dragon Ascendant

- Scenarios:
    - Scenarios 16-26, which comprise Part II, done and (I hope) reasonably balanced.

Just played through the first chapter of this campaign, v0.2.1, normal.

Thoughts on random scenarios:

Monstrous Help
Great idea with the summoned spiders!

Lighting Strike
Definitely my favourite scenario in Chapter I, very exciting. Player's rather limited resources vs. overwhelming force of lvl2 drakes getting big reinforcements. Awesome. My only suggestion is that the loyal dwarves from the south should spawn a bit closer to the keep, because by the time they actually arrive the fight is basically over.

Forest Ablaze
The actual challenge is not so much to kill enemies, but to keep the elf leader alive - he sure has some suicidal tendencies. Even with zephyrs recruited on turn 1 it can be too late to save him (I lucked out the first time though). Can't you make him stay in his keep?

The Wilderness
This is one of the most frustrating scenarios I've played. I honestly don't know how it could be successfully ironmanned for the first time, it simply depends too much on knowledge of the map. You have a huge unexplored map, two objectives and ridiculous numbers of constantly spawning wildlife. Once I scouted the saurian leader and the exit, I restarted and it was pretty straightforward, just switched from x2 to x4 speed, because by turn 20 there's so many damn critters on the map it's not even funny. I'd seriously consider implementing some changes here: reduce the number of animals a little bit (at least lvl1, keep the challenging ones), or give the saurian more gold/better units, or both. Also, make the way to the objective clearer (e.g. an overgrown old path through the southern forest or something), because: a) Myra's hint at the beginning is actually misleading (i.e. the place is not actually by the river), b) if you go south-east (the wrong side), you're basically screwed and might as well restart.

Legend of the Water Dragon
Like in the Wilderness, map knowledge makes a lot of difference. But my main gripe is the lame "teleporting" ambush at the end: all heroes (which must be kept alive) facing lvl3 saurians. In caves. Not cool. You can play flawlessly through the entire scenario and still lose to poor RNG, if you don't know what will happen.
I started Burning Revenge with 1522 gold, looks like gold carryover here and in The Wilderness is too much (unless that's intentional).

Sky Dragon Descends
Holy smokes, that's a lot of dragons, Myra should totally be called Dragonbane afterwards. But player has more than enough units, just fall back behind the moat and go into rotation mode. From turn 12 to 18 the fight kinda loses steam, I was contemplating going after the northern dragons, but then Svarballi showed up. The boss fight is actually pretty cool, I like that some shield guards stayed on the battlefield to compensate for potential bad RNG with Maat.

Farewell
Eh, guess which scenario this reminds me of. I'm just not a fan of the respawn mechanic and in my opinion Song of Fire is overusing it. Player should be rewarded with some respite for promptly dealing with enemies, but that's not really the case - they respawn very fast.

I don't feel qualified to discuss the writing, because I'm not a native English speaker myself, but dialogues and descriptions seem very well written, I didn't notice any grammar or spelling errors.

Why is the fountain harmful to wicked beings? After all, it's, uhm composed of spirits of nature and, as I see it, nature has nothing to do with concepts of good and evil. Or maybe I just played too much D&D in the past... For that matter, why can Maat suddently commune with the nature spirits herself when she's facing the Sky Dragon, even though it was explicitly stated before that only Myra had that special connection with the fountain?

One thing that stands out throughout the campaign is the large number of units that must be kept alive, sometimes for no apparent reason. This can be annoying, but I guess that's the only way to provide more varied story exposition and to flesh out some of those characters (at first I couldn't care less about, say, Ravyan or Jevyan, but by the end they sort of grew on me :D).

This is excellent for a first campaign (I can't believe it's your first!), it's evident a lot of effort was put into it. I'll be starting Chapter II soon, so more feedback upcoming.
