Thanks
It works well enough to make the work simpler for a new coder / maintainer. It relies on the fact that you had a pretty constant dialogue writing style. Example:
Zamael wrote:Fighter: "My lord! Dire news from the southeastern front!"
My script just takes every line, splits it where there is the ":" (the first part becomes the speaker and the rest becomes the message), adds the [message] tag and the "_" translation mark. Every line that cannot be converted this way, gets converted in a [narrator] tag, making it easier to find and move elsewhere - or remove, if it's a comment.
I run such script from the interactive Lua interpreter, using the Terminal (Linux).

I agree. And, after that you post new chapters, I'll rerun the script to convert them.

Well, I'm glad to see people at least like to read this stuff. I just wish I was even close to competent at coding, or that at least someone else might bother.

Seriously, when you can't program "Hello World!" by following every single instruction and not deviating from it at any point, you know you're a lost cause.

Chapter Eleven: Many Surprises Await at the Frozen Ford

There were no encounters with orcs, or drakes, or anything at all for that matter, for most of the journey. While this should have been a good thing, Cheska thought it was strangely eerie. Until now, none of the forces had ever left her alone for a moment, they all seemed to have many reasons to see her dead, and the north was full of orcs to begin with. Why had they stopped?

Her ragtag army headed south, towards Ford of Abez, as fast as it was physically possible to them. Although she was eager to reunite with her father once more, she also wanted to see that her friend Xel was all right: once it had been established that there was no rush with the latter after all, her priorities between the two were more or less even.

The Ford was already in sight when the rear guard reported of the approach of an unusually large orcish force. It was large enough to outnumber them severely, and their defensive positions were bad. Instead of making a stand, Cheska ordered all forces to cross: they would fight the orcs on the other side, with better positions and further human reinforcements.

Unfortunately, crossing would soon become a far more complicated matter than she thought it would be...

---
Spoiler:
(Looking familiar? I pretty much just took the whole thing from Heir to the Throne, for some consistency with this campaign and the world it's set in. Wouldn't make much sense if the Ford looked totally different now than how it was a few decades ago, right? But since it had been a few decades, I could add a few trees and houses in places, to symbolize the passing of time.
Cheska starts from the northern fort, with every single of her veterans already recruited. The southeast fort is inhabited by an orc, while the southwestern one has drakes. The one in charge of the drakes is a warden named Godot.)

Elric: "Look, milady! Orcs have crossed ahead of us."
Cheska: "As are drakes. I fear it will not be quite as a simple matter to cross after all."
Dorothy: "Well, I suppose all this peace and quiet was too good to last."

Godot: "I will not ask you again, foul beasts. Remove yourself from the Wesnoth soil at this instant or feel our burning wrath!"
Orc warlord: "You give me your best shot, lizard! I'm not afraid of you!"
Godot: "So be it, then. You brought this upon yourself."

Lukas: "Are they... are they infighting?"
Godot: "My lady! You have arrived at last!"
Cheska: "I beg your pardon?"
Godot: "Please wait for a moment. I will deal with this orc infestation swiftly, after which I can escort you to your father."
Godot: "You two will have much to talk about."
Cheska: "...Um. What are you...? Why do you help us?"
Godot: "Is there a problem?"
Lukas: "Yes, but it can be dealt with later. There is a large orc force behind us, and another in front of us. Perhaps we should first concentrate upon crossing the ford?"
Cheska: "...Yes. You have to understand, though, that I am a bit confused about the current matters."

Some orcish lackey: "Chief, they're going to cross."
Warlord: "Oh, really? And here I was thinking they had come all the way here and not going to cr-"
Warlord: "Of course they're crossing, you idiot!"
Warlord: "Kill any and every human and drake on sight!"
Lackey: "What about those little guys? Saurians, or whatever they're called?"
Warlord: "Those, too! But save me the biggest, juiciest one!"

---
The mission will be completed succesfully by having Cheska cross the whole river, and then by dealing with the orcs. As mentioned, she already has all her veterans with her, and can recruit more from the fort if she so wishes. Both the orcs and Godot can recruit second level units, but Godot has somewhat less gold in his possession, eventually leaving him outnumbered.
The mission ends in defeat if either Cheska or Godot dies.

When any orc enters anywhere next to some deep water, a pretty great load of skeletons and other things that don't need to breathe show up to the both sides of the Ford.
Orc in question: "Wha-"
Godot: "Undead! What are they doing here?"

They focus themselves exclusively upon the orcs. The player can attack them, and in those cases they will defend themselves, but otherwise they ignore Cheska and her bunch completely. When any player unit reaches next to an undead:
Unit: "What are your kind doing here?"
The undead: "..."
Lukas: "It does not attack."
Cheska: "It does not even acknowledge us."
Dorothy: "If you ask me, these undead are not a threat."
Cheska: "Why wouldn't they, though? Every single living dead we have faced has wanted to kill us!"
Dorothy: "Not all of them."
Cheska: "Not all of them? What do you-"
Cheska: "..."
Cheska: "Silan...?"
Elric: "Could he be still alive, then?"
Cheska: "You there! Where is your master? Tell me!"
Undead: "..."

More orcs begin to show up from the northern edge of the map after turn five.
Elric: "The orcs have caught up with us!"
Cheska: "Hurry! Everyone, over the bridge!"
There's a slurbow in charge and a bunch of other third level orcs and trolls - enough that the player won't start thinking of doing anything stupid without the drake support. He recruits second level units, and has quite a bit more gold than anyone else on the field.

Once the player gets in touch with them drakes:
Lukas: "Why do you help us?"
Godot: "Because I was ordered to."
Elric: "And... why would you be ordered to do such, after all the conflicts we have had before?"
Godot: "Are you perhaps trying to suggest that we are all the same group?"
Elric: "Well..."
Godot: "Because that would be like me saying your high king is best friends with necromancer, just because they are of the same race."
Godot: "That is not exactly nice of you."
Cheska: "All right, that's enough! We can all discuss this when we have gotten away from here."
Lukas: "Duly noted."

If Cheska crosses the river, but the orcs are still present (this is rather likely):
Cheska: "Although I have crossed, we really cannot let the orcs roam freely within my homeland."
Cheska: "I'm afraid father will have to wait a while longer."
Godot: "Fair enough, but are our current forces sufficient in dealing with them?"
Cheska: "They will have to do. With the unexpected help we gained from the undead, I believe we can do this."
Godot: "Forgive me for saying this, but I do not like working with the living dead. Your kind are not the only ones who see them as unnatural."
Zeza: "Trust me, brother, you will get used to it after a while."
(Beat.)
Godot: "Very well, then. We shall stand together, or fall apart."
Cheska: "It seems we are repeating ourselves."
Zeza: "Indeed, and I liked it better the first time."

---
On victory:
Godot: "Lady Cheska, I hereby bid you welcome back to Wesnoth. I trust your journey so far has been fruitful."
Cheska: "I thank you. And there are so many questions I would like to ask you."
Godot: "I am but a humble servant myself, mylady. I am afraid you will have to seek answers from your father and my master."
Cheska: "My father and your master... are not the same person, right?"
Godot: "Indeed they are not. You will meet them both in due time."

Elric: "What of the undead, then? Are we to assume from them that Silan survived?"
Cheska: "Why not? Who other necromancer would have sent undead to help us?"
Lukas: "Why do you think they were sent to help us?"
Cheska: "What do you mean? They did help us!"
Lukas: "Indeed, but it is not the only thing they did."
Lukas: "You are eager to see your friend alive, but you let it blind your sense of judgement."
Lukas: "How many times did you see a living dead throw himself to the fray to save your soldiers? Your friend sounds like his undead would have done exactly that..."
Dorothy: "...Yet these were far more concentrated upon destroying the enemy, rather than defending you."
Cheska: "...And what would that mean? Lukas?"
Lukas: "I am afraid I am as clueless as you are."

- Did I mention I hate this map? Because I do. It's bland and boring. Sadly, I was forced to use it, because if we throw consistency out of the window, we might as well set the whole campaign to the moon.
- The undead that showed up in this mission foreshadow a cameo appearance of one character from another campaign. Can you guess who?
- Honestly, all the drama I ever try to establish everywhere just falls down the drain whenever an orc opens his mouth.

Ehh, I guess that was easier to figure out than I thought.

I'm not sure if I'll simply make some more vague references to him, or actually have him appear in the flesh (so to speak). The latter would probably have me ask permission from his original creator, though.

Would it? He appears in Invasion from the Unknown. Many mainline campaign characters are used in UMC and AFAIK you don't need to get permission to use them.

I vote for actual appearing. What's really cool about Wesnoth that campaign trails cross sometime. Like in a Libery when you fight near Elsenfar, you know that in several years Konrad will revenge you.

Also, Malin would be happy to see that there are in fact humans that are not trying to kill him on sight.

Interlude

The rest of the journey to Dan'Tonk went, fortunately, without any bigger incidents. There were no more sightings of orcs or the undead - but there were many drakes, and this is what worried Cheska. Considering what she had been through, their presence was suspicious to begin with, but it also meant that her father had lied to her. Why?

Godot provided to be quite unhelpful in the matter, merely assuring her that all her questions would be answered in due time, and that he didn't know much of it any better than her anyway. Cheska was willing to accept this explanation for now, although she noted that he acted in a quite suspicious manner.

The manor of the Kuhral family was still in a good shape, all things considered, albeit the worrying amount of drakes in the grounds and premises. She was led through the familiar hallways into the reception hall, where her father was waiting. He seemed a great deal older than when they had last met.

---
Cheska: "Father!"
Nichlas: "Cheska? Oh, my sweet daughter, I am glad you are all right!"
Cheska: "I am not so sure... I could certainly be better, but seeing you again is already helping."

Pleasantries are exchanged, as the father and daughter are reacquainted. Cheska avoids asking questions about the drakes for now, simply wishing to spend some time with her old man. Eventually, however, the talk goes back to business.

Nichlas: "I have heard that the orc invasion has been repelled successfully, thanks to you."
Cheska: "Yes, after... certain difficulties, we managed."
Nichlas: "I am proud of you."
Cheska: "Thank you, father. It means a lot to me. But..."
Nichlas: "...But where have you been since then? Word is, you have travelled across the elven woods, the dwarven dungeons, even the Swamp of Dread!"
Cheska: "Well, we circled around the Swamp, but yes, quite. Father, there are bigger things going on than an orc invasion, and I am afraid that..."
Nichlas: "I understand, daughter."
Cheska: "You do?"
Nichlas: "The undead have been on the move again, disturbingly close to us... there are even sightings, albeit unreliable, of the ghosts and walking corpses within the borders of Wesnoth, even within this town!"
Cheska: "...Father, there are always sightings of undead, and most of them are drunken ramblings."
Nichlas: "Perhaps, but what of the drakes?"
Cheska: "Yes. Yes, that was what I was coming, to, but..."
Nichlas: "You have seen them with me, and you do not need to be afraid. Some of them, like the one called Godot that you already met, are rather charming and nice."
Cheska: "Well... yes, I have met some myself, but could you please explain?"
Nichlas: "There is a... large amount of political disturbance among their homelands. The old chief of a large tribe was recently murdered, and despite being briefly captured, the culprit managed to escape and found its way here."
Cheska: "Father...?"
Nichlas: "I believe you have met him."
Cheska: "...Perhaps. Perhaps I have. I once met a large, villainous drake, one that was uniting the orcs against us, and..."
???: "Please. If I am to interrupt..."
Cheska: "What? Who is there?"

A third person walks to the room, none other than the Lord Flameheart Galragoth himself!

Nichlas: "Ah! Lord Flameheart. I am glad to see you could join us."
Galragoth: "The pleasure is all mine, sir Kuhral."
Cheska: "...What...?"
Garlagoth: "Ah, and is this the daughter you spoke of to me? I am glad to finally make acquaintance with you, miss."
Cheska: "What?"
Nichlas: "Dear, is something wrong?"
Cheska: "Father... yes. Yes, something is..."
Garlagoth: "..."

It occurs to Cheska that she has actually seen very little human guards in this manor. Most of them have been drakes. Speaking a wrong word now would endanger both her, her father, and any other human in here - assuming he even believed her in the first place:

Cheska: "...No. No, nothing is wrong. I apologise."
Garlagoth: "Very well. Now, please, you were saying that you had met this murderer?"
Nichlas: "Yes, something about a large drake..."
Garlagoth: "Oh. No, no, no, there was certainly one behind the orc invasion, but that one was not the one that murdered my father. No, the murderer is a small saurian named Xel."
Cheska: "What?!"
Nichlas: "Cheska, I have been told that he has travelled with you for a while. Is this true?"
Cheska: "What... yes... but... hold on, what? He is... what?"
Garlagoth: "Miss Kuhral, the murderer spent a great deal of time with you, gaining your trust. Yet you never chose to question the shackles he was wearing, did you?"
Cheska: "But..."
Garlagoth: "Unfortunately, while he was captured alive by elves, information that may or may not have reached you..."
Cheska: "It... it has. Yes, I heard of it. I also heard that he escaped."
Garlagoth: "Yes. That is indeed a problem, and he may come after myself, or after you, next. We are not certain why he would have murdered my father, so we are trying to cover all bases."
Nichlas: "And that includes keeping you here, my dear, for the time being."
Cheska: "Father?"
Nichlas: "The minions of the murderer, all saurians and drakes, have been locked into the dungeons. We will look into their crimes later on, and may have execute som-"
Cheska: "Hold on, what?!"
Nichlas: "Was it not true that some of them were involved in a nasty incident with elves a while back, even while you travelled through the area?"
Cheska: "What? No, that was..."
Garlagoth: "Please, miss, try and calm down. Perhaps we should continue this talk tomorrow, when everyone is feeling a little better? You may even speak to some of your so-called friends, then, although I should say they might not be so willing."
Cheska: "..."
Cheska: "...Yes. I believe we should do so. If you excuse me, father, I am weary. I think I should retire to sleep."
Nichlas: "Yes... yes, I should say so. Have pleasant dreams, my dear."
Cheska: "Hardly."

She starts to walk away, but stops after a moment.

Cheska: "...One last question, father. Why did you lie to me?"
Nichlas: "Of what?"
Cheska: "In our letters, I asked about the drakes. I wished to have every piece of knowledge about them, gained nothing, and yet now I find the place is full of them! Why is that?"
Nichlas: "Ah... well, you see, that was the Lord Flameheart's idea. He believed that since you had met some in battle, and that those that you knew as "friends" were in fact criminals, it would be for the best to keep the information from you."
Cheska: "..."
Cheska: "...I see. Good night, then."

***********************************

Chapter 12: Prison Break

Unbeknownst to everyone in the manor, or the dungeons for that matter, other forces were on the move tonight...

---
Spoiler:
(The fog is present, obscuring the fact that the place is pretty much filled with guards, the fortified areas especially. There are some human crossbowmen and heavy infantry and the like, but most of them are drakes of all sorts. At the very end, there is a drake warden, alone at this point of the thing. The cells are mostly filled with humans and saurians, as well as some common thieves, containing some of the living troops you retained from the last mission: the very last big cell has the remaining troops, as well as all the named units - if any live - and that one is your objective tonight. The very bottom-right cell is the execution chamber and the corpse dump: if anyone could add in some bodies, that'd be nice.)

The main entrance has a bunch of guards at it: upon hearing a snap or something from the darkness, one guard goes over to investigate.

Guard: "Halt! Who goes there?"
???: "..."
Guard: "Show yoursel-"

He is immediately attacked from behind by a spectre, nightgaunt, or any similar normally invisible creature.

???: "...I believe I could have remained out of sight without alerting him."
Minion: "This is no time to take risks, master. We must move rapidly and without notice."
Silan: "Yes, I agree."

The camera pans over to the execution chamber, where a few invisible undead are waiting: if Silan carried out any veterans from prior battles (it's been a while since you fielded him), then they will be there. Otherwise there will be one spectre, one nightgaunt, and three wraiths.

Silan: "I have summoned some vengeful spirits from amongst the dead criminals. If we can assassinate the warden without making a scene, and take his keys, we may be able to free the prisoners from within and attack the enemy from a place they did not see us coming."
Minion: "If we fail..."
Silan: "Then we must make with what we have, and simply assault the prison from outside with full force. It will be bloody, but at least you guys are already dead and as such expendable. Protect the living ones with your own bodies!"
Minion: "I am happy to serve."

---
Upon that, Silan and the minion disappear from sight and command, and the player is put in charge of the silent assassins. The objective is to kill the warden, take his key, and open the door of the final cell: the other cells are quite locked for the time being. There are many guards here, and they sometimes move around without warning, but if one manages to slip past without notice, then they will not do much. Immediately upon being seen, however...

Guard: "...What...?"
Minion: "..."

If the offending guard is slain during this turn, without giving him the opportunity to call for reinforcements, then the situation can still be saved. However, it is more than likely that there are other guards nearby, and they will immediately on their turn move towards the scene of the murder.

Guard: "What happened? Are you all right?"
Guard: "He just fell! Are you feeling sick?"
Guard: "What is going on?"

These are but a few of the random pieces of frantic stuff they can speak. It is more than likely, too, that at the end of the turn one or more of them sees a horrifying undead creature, in which case the cycle starts from the beginning. However, as soon as there is a ghost in sight, immediately next to a guard, when he begins his turn and is still alive...

Guard: "Ghosts! We are under attack!"
Guard: "To arms! Everyone, to aaaarms!"
Silan: "...Oh dear, looks like I have been noticed."
Guard: "Tighten the defenses!"

At this point, the whole place awakens like a beehive: more guards are added around the place, and those that are nearby to the invisible stalkers, immediately start to move closer towards the scene of disturbance. The warden stays where he is, but reinforces himself with two drake slashers. The mission has thus become significantly harder.

When the player reaches the warden, whether noticed before or not:

Warden: "W-what?! What is the meaning of this?"
Minion: "We have been granted an opportunity for vengeance, murderer."
Minion: "You will join usss..."
Warden: "No... stay back. Stay back!"

When slain, he leaves behind no physical keys: rather, they are assumed to have been picked up by the ghost or whatever (how they can pick up items is a question, but it probably works the same way they can hurt stuff in the first place). The cells can be opened now, and once the big one is done:

Dorothy: "What? What is going on?"
Minion: "Come with us..."
Lukas: "...I am not particularly inclined to do so. Did you not just slay the warden? Who are you?"
Minion: "We are with your friend Silan."
Minion: "Come, we shall lead you out of here."
Zeza: "Silan! Is he all right?"
Minion: "You will meet him on the outside. But enough talk now: they are coming."
Guard (elsewhere): "We are being invaded! To arms!"

Meanwhile, Silan appears once again on the outside, this time with a whole bunch of the undead - including all the veterans. He also has a camp here, from which he can recruit some more.

Silan: "It is done. Let us go!"

If all the wraiths were slain before the warden could be killed and the cell door opened, however, Silan will still pop up with his undead army, but:

Guard: "What was that...? What attacked us? What is going on?"
Guard: "I am afraid this was merely the beginning. We must be careful."
Silan: "I have lost contact with the infiltrates... fine. We shall merely invade them. Go, my minions."

And so the mission goes to a total slugfest, whether from two sides or just one. If the warden is still alive, cell doors cannot be opened until he is dead: if he has been killed, the bottom army can open doors, but Silan cannot until he meets up with them. (This might be tricky to implement, however: in that case, just let everyone open stuff.) The cells contain a variety of bunch, as already mentioned, and have several options for what to say when their doors are opened, depending on who they are:

Any human: "Are we free again? Let me join the battle for my mistress!" "We shall fight together for freedom!" "Let me help, I will-... wait, are those undead? Is Silan all right?"
Saurians: "Whew! I thought I would rot in here forever!" "I didn't enjoy visiting a cell again at all! Thanks for letting me out." "I was actually about to break through myself just now, but thanks anyway."
Drakes: "Free once more! Let us bring the pain back to our enemies!" "Break through their lines and reunite with our comrades? I am with you!" "Hmph, it seems I am fighting with the undead again..."
Rogues, thieves, outlaws, and other criminals: "Thanks, mate! If it helps getting me out, I'll help!" "Eesh, I was so scared! I'll turn over a new leaf from now on!" "I was framed. Honest! Didn't do nuthin'!"

Afterwards, it is merely the question of getting everyone out. The mission is considered a success once every living comrade is outside the borders of the prison, standing on the grass.

Zeza: "Silan? Is that really you?"
Silan: "Long time no see, friends!"
Dorothy: "I am happy to see that you are all right."
Elric: "We thought you were dead!"

Lukas: "...Silan Abner, I presume."
Silan: "That would be my name. Who would be asking?"
Lukas: "My name is Lukas Vegeir, and I have travelled with your friend Cheska for a while now. She has told me a lot about you, and I have been curious to meet you."
Silan: "Thank you, I suppose."
Lukas: "You are welcome, though you would not thank me if you knew more of me. Simply consider yourself being watched, now."
Silan: "...I will.."
???: "What's going on in here?"

Then, Cheska arrives! She has a few more human guards she managed to get with her.

Silan: "Cheska!"
Cheska: "...Silan? What... how..."
(beat)
Cheska: "Uh..."
Silan: "Is something wrong?"
Cheska: "..."
Cheska: "...No, everything is... everything is fine... I am not crying."
Silan: "Certainly not. You are a strong woman, and would never cry."
Cheska: "I thought... I came here to rescue my friends... I did not think you would have been here already."
Silan: "Happy to give you a pleasant surprise, then."
(beat)
Silan: "But now, we must all go. We cannot tarry here."
Cheska: "Yes. I agree. We will talk to each other and compare notes on the way."
Zeza: "Where are we going?"
Cheska: "We're going east. We will find Xel: I have... I am worried of him."
Silan: "Xel? But I thought..."
Cheska: "He has escaped the grasp of elves. There is a chance he is alive, and I will not stop until I have his body in my arms, whether living or dead. I must ask many things from him, especially concerning those shackles..."
Silan: "Oh. Um. Oh! He is alive? Well, could be? Yes, then, certainly, we shall go right away!"

- So, I should say we are finally around halfway through the campaign! With this pace, therefore, we should reach the end by... around summer, 2012. I hope you are as anxious about it as I am!
- I'm not particularly well-motivated at the moment, however, mostly still updating because of the whole Unfinished Business thing: I just can't stop thinking about it, and get depressed, every once in a while. Would've wanted to play this, one day.
- Why are the map screenshots automatically saved as .bmps? Maybe it's just because I'm not a programmer, but I see no redeeming qualities in saving everything in such big chunks, when just about every other format would be around one-tenth so large.

Spoiler:

Just to know, did you already tried downloading Anonymissimus' A Simple Campaign from the server and modifying it?

If you're using MS Paint for saving the screenshots, when choosing Save As in the File menu, you should be able to select JPG as file format (assuming that you're on Windows).

No. Should I?
If you're using MS Paint for saving the screenshots, when choosing Save As in the File menu, you should be able to select JPG as file format (assuming that you're on Windows).
Yeah, but the map editor itself saves screenshots as BMPs. I need to still open them on MS Paint to save them again on JPG, which strikes me as an entirely unnecessary step which shouldn't be taken unless BMP had some obvious advantage, justifying the editor using that format.

Thanks for what you've done, anyway.

Yes, one attempt is worth. It's a well commented campaign, ideal for getting started. Change one thing per time and see the result: this way, you'll know if you made it right or not. And don't forget of the WML Workshop for your WML questions. :)

BMP is an uncompressed format, while JPG is a compressed, quality-loss format. So, an image saved with JPG may have some "artifacts" in it.

I got someone to made a working, incredibly awesome version of the very first mission. I'm fairly sure I uploaded it as well.

It'd be cool to get some more of that stuff, but it doesn't seem too likely at the moment.

now for the campaign.i may be a bit emotinal on dis post.
at first,i was about to BEG for u to bring xel back.
when you said :
this is why i had to kill him off.
,it brought tears to my eyes.sure, teens aren't supposed to cry,but...
1.saurians are my fav. wesnoth race
2.IT WAS THE edited MAIN CARACTER.
