Maybe "Mal" is short for "Malin". He seems to be one of the first to use it.

It could well be that, although he wasn't the first to use it, he was the one who made it popular.

In any case, though, I'm not sure how...relevant this is to the topic at hand. It was a little bit of a thread-necromancy (in a number of ways ), and maybe should be split off--I'm not entirely sure what the policy for post-mortem thread-hijacks is...
