Clarification of terms

Post by GunChleoc »

There's an error message I don't understand well enough to make a good translation. Maybe we could use this thread for the odd bit that itsn't related to units etc.

Can't droid invalid side: '$side'.
Can't droid networked side: '$side'.

What does this mean exactly? What has the player/computer been trying to do that failed?

Those error messages are spewed when someone attempts to make a side into an AI side and fails, hence the verbal use of droid.

‘Droid’ is short for ‘android,’ a robot, and yes, it’s from Star Wars and is a trademarked term.

On that note, I never really liked the word “droid” here. It isn’t a particularly fitting word for the fantasy period. We could do better.

'Automate' is boring but would be accurate, methinks.
There is no need to 'verb' every noun as we seem to do naturally in modern English.

In games where someone can be turned into an <X>, then when it happens you usually would say that they got <X>'d. So then to "droid" the side is to turn it into a robot. This makes perfect sense to me.

Of course robots don't exist in a pure fantasy setting, but then again neither does the command mode. I don't see this standard being applied to other command strings such as "debug" (because obviously they aren't part of the game's content, they are just keyboard shortcuts for hidden game controls that have no GUI element...)

Yep, it's an error message, so it doesn' really need to have a fantasy feel.

I went with the equivalent of "The AI can't take control of..."

I need some help with Multiplayer this time, version 1.10.4.

1. After selecting a map, in the list of players to choose from,

--give--
src/multiplayer_connect.cpp:762

Textdomain: wesnoth

What does it mean? Nothing happens when I select it, so I can't find yout by testing.

2. Also, where are the map descriptions displayed, so I can check for string length?

“--give--” serves as a sort of header in that menu; the choices below the header are those you can give the side to.

The descriptions are shown in the tooltip that appears when you place the cursor over the minimap in the game creator.

I have difficulty with this string in wesnoth-help about hatchlings:

Code: Select all

A young drake that has not yet seen another generation hatch. The younger of the current generation of hatchlings are the most aggressive is the behavior of the <ref>dst='flight' text='flight'</ref>.
The second sentence is not an English sentence. I don't know anything about drakes, so I can't figure this out myself.

The drakish encycopedia isn't yet added in the game, mainly because it clash with canon lore. Since it is rather wip I wouldn't bother with it.

OK, thanks for letting me know. I wondered why I couldn't find it during testing :lol2:

I have another string I don't understand:

Wesnoth 1.11.8
Textdomain: wesnoth
src/time_of_day.cpp:43

String: Stub Time of Day

What does "Stub" mean here?

wesnoth-help

[dummy]: id=feeding
This unit gains 1 hitpoint added to its maximum whenever it kills a unit, except units that are immune to plague.

Who is immune to plague here, the killing unit or the unit being killed?

The stub string sounds like it probably shouldn't even be translatable.

As for feeding: the unit being killed.
