A fellow member at http://www.shiningforcecentral.com posted a link to Wesnoth.
SFC is dedicated to the classic Shining Force games, which were Sega's strat-RPG series. Hence the linking of a relevant game like Wesnoth.
I had dial-up when they first posted about it, but now that I just got DSL, I'd had this site bookmarked the whole time til I could feasibly d/l it. Don't regret the wait at all, this game is great

Inside Mac Games
I found Wesnoth in the fall of 2005, when Inside Mac Games did a review. They were highly complimentary, and the game is even better than the review made it sound.

On my old computer I had tis program called 'Synaptic Package Manager', and I was going through the 'games' list, and there was this thing called 'Wesnoth'. It looked kinda intresting, so I downloaded it, the bundled campaigns, and some extra feature(sounds, music, server, etc)
I opened the application... And I saw the light.

I found this game a few months ago through an amazing Windows gaming resource: the Home of the Underdogs page, which you can link to from this Wikipedia article.
And I haven't played anything else since.
