How a unit lvl up?

i just noticed,the unit need x number of xp to lvl up,they get:

-better hp
-rewrok on weapons
-and better resistance



you can notice that when they get better resistence,they get better armors and we can clearly see that,same goes for the weapons,elf heros get a extra sword(but for some reason,he dont use it,just to make him look cool) and swordsman have sword instead of spears.

the question is,HOW in the hell they get better weapons and armor in the middle of the combat?
