Question: player positions on multiplayer random maps
I've been trying to figure out if there was a predictable logic behind the assignment of player positions on the random maps created for multiplayer play. In other words, I wanted to predict in which castle depending on player number a position would appear. It seems, however, that there is no consistent logic behind this .
Can anyone confirm this?

IIRC, it generates the castles randomly and then chooses one for each player based on how many of that player's preferred terrains are nearby.
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.
That sounds good enough for free-for-alls, but for all kinds of team-based games and scenario-like setups it would be great to have the feature of disabling this random-ness (and maybe display the map during faction choice - with a highlight of the player's position).
I think this is something very simple that would enhance cooperative multiplayer a LOT, IMHO.

I think controlling placement of player positions is much more important than displaying them, which was just an added idea (which is always bad style when posting new suggestions, I suppose ).bill_murray wrote:We only need to change getMinimap function and locate starting locations. [...]

It's the same, if you know where are the colors, you know how to make teams. Ex: you will be red and me blue 'cause they are together.Rhuvaen wrote:I think controlling placement of player positions is much more important than displaying them, which was just an added idea (which is always bad style when posting new suggestions, I suppose ).bill_murray wrote:We only need to change getMinimap function and locate starting locations. In a random map, all is random, including start positions, IMO.
If you want to change the position of starting castles in the map, use the map editor.

So far I've implemented a checkbox that will arrange starting positions in a clockwise order during random map generation. Or so I thought... because the actual starting positions seem to get rearranged whne the player chooses his faction later on. Oh well, work for the bin ...
But that just means that the solution is best looked for not during map generation but during game setup. I think a checkbox "random positions" in the game creation menu (checked by default), which when unchecked allows the game host to swap player numbers and see where they appear on the map would be nice (or maybe have the clockwise arrangement of player positions so the map isn't needed - that way I could also reuse some work ).
I think I'll look into that (but when exactly, I can't see yet), but I don't know if my ignorance of all things SDL will allow me to make the swap functionality and refresh the player list...
