That's due simply to the fact that most people who play wesnoth are either in the later teen years (14-18 ) or an adult, or developer. I fall into the first of the three, being I'm 15. (In game somebody thought I was 22- it rocked. 8) )

Yes, and being the ancient and timeless wizards of Wesnoth, us developers are ageless. ;)

I have no clue what age people think I am when I play. Skill is not an indicator of age, for my brother who is younger than 14 is better at playing than a good deal of the people on the server.

You speak the truth.

Wasn't there a poll thread earlier about ages?

I remember a sticky here in the user's forum about how old player's were. I always wondered if it was removed because of some Web etiquette about it being bad form to ask someone's age.
