Now this is how I have imagined it.

So, unless there are any objectons/modifications, could the mighty devs agree to make it an official declaration, and send to translators to translate? Not necessarily now, but when the 1.2 will be close enough...

Please also at least link to some simple changelog'ish (but still human-readable) list of changes between the two stable versions, too. Something like this:

Code: Select all

Notable changes from 1.0.2 to 1.2:
 * Gameplay changes:
   * Changed resilient trait bonus from +7hp to +10%+3hp
   * Decreased strong trait hitpoints bonus from 2 to 1
   * Backstab now works if opposite unit is non-incapacitated enemy of
     defender
   * Slow now only halves movement and damage
   * Healers now heal the same amount to all wounded units around them
     instead of distributing a set amount of HP among all the wounded
   * New base terrain: mushroom grove
   * New terrains (aliases of existing ones): great tree, illuminated
     cave, rockbound cave, impassable mountains
   * Many balancing changes to unit stats

 * Campaigns:
   * New mainline campaigns: The South Guard, Two Brothers,
     Under the Burning Suns
   * Mainline campaigns removed: Son of the Black Eye, The Dark Hordes
   * Many changes and improvements to the retained old campaigns

 * Multiplayer:
   * Optional turn time limits
   * A new host is chosen automatically if the original host leaves or
     is disconnected
   * Random music playlist, music no longer tied to factions
   * Many new standard multiplayer maps, old ones heavily revised

 * Graphics:
   * Team-colouring of units (the units show the colour of their side
     on their clothing, banners, etc)
   * All-new attack icons
   * Many new or improved terrain graphics
   * Many new unit graphics, animations and portraits

 * Music and sound:
   * Several new music tracks, some old ones removed
   * Lots of new sound effects
   * All units now play sounds properly when hit, dying, attacking and missing

 * Game engine
   * A lot of new WML features for content creators
   * Ability to write custom AI's in Python
I've probably forgotten some things from this, please add to it if you think of some general change that should be mentioned.

I know someone might see this as somewhat redundant, but it's more readable than a longer announcement/advertisement IMHO.

EDIT: Actually, nevermind this. I hadn't had a proper look at http://www.wesnoth.org/start/1.2/ yet, which I think is good enough after all. Of course this can still be done, but I'm not sure anymore that there'd be any real benefit.

That page says December 23 2006, is that the official date of the 1.2 release?

This date is in the future so there's room for unwanted delays left. There will never be strong gurantees about future release dates. It's just very likely that 1.2 will go out on that date. Likely, not sure.

because of IIRWIIR, I don't think its a good idea to actually place a date there. it may disappoint if it is delayed.

Also, the rule has always been IIRWIIR, so when you place a date, its not exactly adhering to your own rules, (even though you can change them at any moment). so, next time, people may ask for a release date, pointing to this reference to say that the release date has been released before, so it should also be released next time too.

It's a stable release so it's normal that we're rather sure a few days before and we need a date in the announcment for translators. If people complain that they want a fixed date next time, we'll happily ignore them, lock the threads or delete the posts. :D

Hehe, I remember hurrying with translations for 1.2 when the deadline was thought to be "beginning of June".

A good example of how things may change. We really thought it would go out at this time back then... But in this case the date is in the text to translate which makes it even more important. :)
