The game doesn't start

Post by Heindal »

The game doesn't start. I checked the logs in ... \wesnoth\Wesnoth1.14\logs:

Automatically found a possible data directory at D:\Programme\Steam\SteamApps\common\wesnoth
20200122 00:41:24 error filesystem: Could not determine path to user's Documents folder! (0x80070005) User config/data directories may be unavailable for this session. Please report this as a bug.

The game seems not be able to find my documents folder. I can access it however. I tried to start the app as administrator. It did not help.
I'm still using 1.14.9. Yesterday I could access the game, but I've installed the current windows update on the evening.

Will try to restart and inform you if that helped. Maybe I have to upgrade the wesnoth version.

Restart did not help, unfortunately. It seems to have the newest version.
Additional info - it's the Steam Version.

I've installed the current windows update on the evening.
you too? some of the games installed in my Windows 10 laptop have ceased to be functional for some reason. I got some warnings from Windows Defender Shield that it would be blocking some features of most of them unless I allowed the app. Is this a windows thing? My current master build also stopped working for a moment but resumes functionality after a re-build.

Seems like windows disagrees that you have a Documents folder. Anything special about your documents dir? Is it synced to the cloud? (OneDrive, etc.)

Note that "20200122" seems to imply that this is a very old error message.

Also, how/why are you still on 1.14.9 if you're using Steam? It should be automatically updating Wesnoth.

I know. I had an idea. I've checked wesnoth.exe itself. It says 1.14.16.0 in the details. So I might have seen 1.14.9 in the logs or somewhere.
As gnombat pointed out that the logs were pretty old. My apologies, I haven't checked the date.

As far as I know I don't use Onedrive and don't want to use it, but maybe some changes have been done with the last Windows update. (GDPR?).
I will try to reinstall the game (and save my add-on folders before) and will check if you I can find something out.
There has been recent changes to my user setting since the update, according to the windows event, so it might be that this is the cause.

Deinstallation and reinstallation of wesnoth did not work. Even so I start from Steam, the game does not start.
Could be a bigger problem, I don't know for sure. If I find a solution or workaround I will post it.

Edit: maybe one final information.

The app (game) starts and tries to create a cache. At this moment the app is closed. I will now try to deinstall the current windows updates and hopefully find out which one caused the problem.

Found it. Currently I'm translating one of my campaigns. It seems that the mo and po somehow confused the cache (????). I'm not quite sure how this is happening, but after copying the mo and po files (everything inside translations to be exact) I could start the app again. Pew.

Obviously it had nothing to do with the Windows Update, but it is still strange.
I'm sorry for any troubles I might have caused.

The important logfiles are saved in the userdata documents, they at least gave me a hint as there were some warning asking for a 'translations' folder for some add-ons. Still there is nothing in the log, when the app couldn't start - just the error general but not what it is:

I will be more exact in the next post, tomorrow evening.

Re: The game doesn't start

The error was caused by a "de.po" file in the translations/wesnoth-trader/ of the add-on.
For some reason I'm not able to add the files to the attachments, even so it's just 863 kb.

If you want to test the I can sent you an e-mail or attach it elsewhere on the forum.

I assume, when checking the installed add-ons, wesnoth crashes when it reads the de.po in the translation folder and this crash isn't properly logged. As it just happens with translations and than only under specific circumstances it is not a critical error, imho.

If you have additional questions considering the bug or the file, just message me.

(final note: the translation works fine and smooth using the mo file in the translations/de/LC_MESSAGES folder)

Thank you for your support and suggestions.

If you rename it to have a txt extension, does it upload?

I had the same idea, but that did not work. I tried almost everything except zip it. Maybe the file itself is broken somehow.
I'm using Poedit. Could that be part a problem?

I don't think that would be an issue.

I copied and pasted the de.po into an txt. It shows the same message.

I can not post the text itself here, the mesage says:

Your message contains 963680 characters.
The maximum number of allowed characters is 60000.

Maybe this is one of the reason why I can't upload the txt.

Did you try your idea of zipping it? I would think a .zip file would be a lot smaller.
