video mode again

Well, someone told me that I could change video mode in the preferences dialog, but when clicking the video mode button, I get
"there are no alternative video modes available".

What to do to change the videomode? Running the latest CVS (10 minutes old)

That would mean that there are no alternative video modes available for you (Wesnoth checks what video modes are available and shows only them).

Minimum resolution in fullscreen is 1024x768. If windowed you can "freely" resize window (though if you go below 1024x768 the panels don't really scale).

If you want to try to force Wesnoth into a certain mode, quit the game, edit $HOME/.wesnoth/preferences and add

xresolution=blah
yresolution=blah
