On normal, if you have good recalls, you can defeat the enemy leaders, but you'll probably lose more units than if you do a hasty retreat. Two troll warriors can take out any unit in 1 turn at night, and there's only so many Iron Maulers you can stand to lose. A quick retreat lets you leave your least experienced units or recruits as meat shields while your best units get away, and you can do it more quickly, saving the chance of some trolls punching a hole through your lines and killing a valuable unit. I'd like to win this and not lose a lot of units, but the level 3 trolls are just too brutal.

Lvl3 trolls are brutal, but using grand knights you can withstand the their attacks if when they come you already have gotten rid of the other 2 leaders (feasable on normal difficulty).
Then you'll surely loose some frontal troops, but you'll eventualy win if you manage well
