The Rise of Wesnoth campaign - with no losses

Post by hochbass »

After the finish of HttT I maid a nice try with a TROW -No Losses. For my first time playing this campaign I made it on easy mode.

But to make the game a little more difficult ( as I mentened at the begin) I allway recalled my weekest units.

I did the No Loss with increasing stress. TRoW on easy is much more difficult then HttT on hard.
Especially when fighting against saurian you have no chance to hide your wounded units and so you must play without beeing wounded.
I had to do the Saurian Task of the elfes with only 100 Gold. Thats the most difficult part in this campagn.

The Dragon Task - I had a lot of luck because the waked Dragon attacked a White Mage only one point away from becomng Mage of Light and well guarded by two Royal Guards. So I had the chance for nice counter attack.

The last scenario The Rise of Wesnoth is very difficult too. You have to hold all your units together as a battle array. When you come to the river do not fight against the green and pink if there are blue undead units nearby. They block the undead from attacking with the heavy fighter units.

Had somebody succesfull made the No Loss in Middle or Hard???

Well done. I know exactly what you mean with the Saurians.

I've done it on medium. I think EP has as well.

Our intel says he hasn't.

Paladins take much damage, but they give it back.

Yes. Iron Maulers are slow but stand like a iron wall but never give them tree free positions to become attacked by ranged weapon fighters. They will die faster as you can imagin.
But also never let them be attacked in rivers with the 10% resistence.
Setup up in a line and flank them with Royal Guards or Grant Knights, backup with Mages of Light and a tank is rolling unable to stop.

Damn straight. Orcish Crossbowmen in particular do a real number on them.

Sure enough, I haven't. I've tried a couple times but I always get bored before getting very far.

(the first three scenarios are longer than HttT's first five...)
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

Now Im trying on hard Level

A Harrowing Escape:
I'am standing before the last green Leader in turn 24/45. But this is only possible if you get a nearly 100% lucky game. Save and reload is absolut a must do.
And ... you have to retreat some times to have a winning turn a little later.

I see my own replays and feel - WOW - This is a real impossible game.

Lets see how long this will continue. But I thing the end will coming very soon.

TROW on hard with no losses is very hard to play.

I had some very nice results in "Looking for Luck"
Some of the replays shows a little weekness of the KI when the leader leaves his home and run into a counterattack.
Have a look at... its very interesting

It took me a lot of time to find a way to victory
01_a_summer_of _storms_replay_-hard_No_loss 1h50min
02_The fall_ replay -hard No Loss 2h30min
03_a harrowing escape replay-hard_No_Loss 2h40min
04_The_Esten_Swamp_replay_ hard_No Loss 2h15min
05_the_Oldwoods- replay_-Hard_No_Loss 1h15min

Now I have the problem with the next, a real harakiri play I could win
but I got no bonus gold and have to fight Clearwater Port with only 100 gold.

Have a look at the replay and tell me if there are ways to have a earlier victory.

Edit: Can I rename the german save names into the english names?
My german language wesnoth does not open a renamed replay???

I did that mission [Clearwater Port] on hard with no losses.
Start by recruiting 6 spearmen. Recall later as you have gold.

On hard with no losses should not be much harder than with losses, because you cannot afford to lose many units on hard.

Against saurians skirmisher your wounded units will die and there is not much you can do against . This is the real problem in playing No Loss - suicide assassins

Now I have a hint for beginners:
- try to recruit only "fast" mages - advance them allways to white mages ( 5 move points mages advance to fire mages)
You need White Mages/MoL with 6 move points to hold your lines close without lose of speed.

@joshudson
In first view this may be a great idea:
Spearman castle defence 60%, near and distance attacks - the one and only defence unit.
This will be a very interesting fight sitting in castle and waiting for the enemy.

But in campaigns you have to collect experiance to advance all units to L3

In my 1-st attemp I had no chance with a L1/L2 selection
Now I will try it with only my L2 veterans (3 shocktrouper, 2 swordman, 2 Red mage, 1 White mage)
and I hope the princess can hold the northern river

I would like to know if someone can kill all (or only one) leaders on hard with only 100 gold

My main strategy was to use the 3 Iron maulers and my 3 GK's with MOL backup as my main lines. It worked well, even against Saurians. The Grand Knights eventually had above 90 HP, making them nice damage sponges. I protected my wounded with my lancer assassin squad. My biggest problem was anytime I had to fight nagas in the water. I didn't play this campaign with an eye for no losses, but most of the scenarios worked out that way. Some day I might try again for no losses using my hideously-strong-veteran strategy.
Hope springs eternal.
