Tom_Of_Wesnoth attempts 'Art'

Post by Tom_Of_Wesnoth »

Eight years ago, I attempted Wesnoth art for the first time. It didn't go well.
The worst part is it was meant to be an orc.

Eight years later, I'm trying again. I'm starting slow, with some simple frankenpack units. Let's hope I'm better than I was last time.
This is my first attempt. I was just getting back into pixel art with a simple frankenstien.

Similar thing with this one, although I reworked the cape and shoulders slightly.

This one I worked on a bit more. I recoloured the chestpiece to match the rest, and made some adjustments to the arms and head to make everything fit together better.

I've decided to revisit my terrible old 'War of the Guards' idea from eight years ago (http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php ... 1&p=254530). Not for any real reason, I just thought it might be fun to try to adapt it into something that isn't terrible. For that reason I've tried to make a South Orc 'Macer':
I took pieces from several units (and thier animations) and also from the frankenpack. I recoloured the helmet and legs.

... what...is that thing from 8 years ago.

8 years on, you've definitely have improved. :D The frankens aren't bad, but the right leg of the elf looks really blurry and hard to read.

The leg is like that in the frankenstine pack I used, for some reason. I've tried to fix it:

Hey Tom,

You were before my time, but not far enough that I didn't see you in action when I was a lurker. I remember the random help tips on the title screen used to quote the "Tome of Wesnoth". For a long while now though, it's random characters from mainline campaigns that are quoted. In my most idle moments, I wondered if there was any sort of connection.

Anyhow, back on topic:
Are you just trying to get sprites for use in something, like that "War of the Guards"? Or is this a general digital art exercise? I ask because the cut&paste packs are nice for making practical image files to use, if that is your goal. But if you are trying to learn the obscure and mystical practice of pixel art, it's not worth much. So, what is your goal?

I am planning to make 'War of the Guards', but I'm also trying to improve my pixel art. They're not just frankenstines, I am making other minor changes and trying to gradually make each unit more unique and less of a frankenstine. The South Orc Grunt, for example, I modified the helmet, skirt, legs and mace.

The leg is much better now. :)

The second franken is also pretty good. Only problem is it looks like he's gonna tip over at any second.

I really like your units, only two little things you could do better.

1. The South Orc doesn't look so 'muscular' like other orcs. There is something weird on his hip, I can hardly say what.

2. If you compare your elf to the others, I think he is a bit to tall.

I think you did well with your units. Go on improving them.

1. The South Orc is only a level one, so he's not meant to be too muscular. I'm not sure what you mean about the hip. :hmm:

2. The Elf is a bit tall, yes. I've tried to make him a bit shorter:

About the orc: I meant that the body and the legs doesn't fit so good. I can't say what really isn't so good.

Does it look better or worse now? Also, what do you think about the different way I've done the eyes this time?

I think the orc is right now but I don't really like the eyes. :hmm:
It looks like they were glowing and I think if someone has a helmet on his head, you can't see the eyes behind.

The old eyes and new legs it is, then! I think this version should be the final one. Any more changes to make or I am done here?
