Kanzil's art
I'm a beginner at art, and would like a little advice on this sprite-critique is welcome. The horse and head are frankensteined from the knight, but the rest is original( I think).
It's intended for my campaign and is also my avatar.
Thank you

Re: Kanzil's art
I don't understand the sprite. Does he have a huge sword with little magenta hearts? The body is kind of a mess with all this bright colours and it's difficult to see the body shape and the problem is almost the same with the feather in his helm.

Re: Kanzil's art
So basically it's all a bit vague? The reason for the sword having crimson bits on it is because I felt It looked cool...I know it doesn't really make sense .

Re: Kanzil's art
This is pretty much what's in my mind too. The body is flat and full of indescribable texture. Try to simplify first to bring out the shape, and then add details.perseo wrote:The body is kind of a mess with all this bright colours and it's difficult to see the body shape
The pink thingys on the sword are too blocky. They don't look natural. Try to smooth them up.
Re: Kanzil's art
Is this any better?I've changed the sword (it's one by Zerovirus, I hope he doesn't mind) and re-worked the armour.
BtW, the sword is only a placeholder, till I can make one myself

Re: Kanzil's art
Maybe you should explain... exactly what's going on here? What's up with the cotton-candy hair and the crazy red microdetails all over what I can only surmise is the body?
Re: Kanzil's art
Actually, that's supposed to be a plume...I think I'll just remove it! And what's wrong with the hair?
EDIT: Oh...you thought the plume was hair! I must be really bad then...

Re: Kanzil's art
The problem is the plume is not well-separated from the helmet so they look like a whole thing which must be the hair. I guess you should do a more subtle plume without all this artifice. BTW the body is still wrong, maybe you should try to make a body without the arms and then add the arms and the sword coz I think you're not understanding the real body shape you want.

Re: Kanzil's art
Well...I think I'll come back to this when I'm a little more experienced.
For now, here's another one, with the helmet and cross taken from the old graphics library. It's supposed to be a lord-legate (historically the pope's personal representative, and endowed with immense spiritual power; they were sent only on the most important missions, such as leading a crusade).

Re: Kanzil's art
Again- overusage of pixel-level detail. I have no idea what's going on with his legs and shoulders- the helmet is really the only readable part.
Re: Kanzil's art
It seems I've kind of missed the point of pixel art-I thought you where supposed to build it up one pixel at a time. Looking at the tutorials again it seems I definitely got it wrong. I don't quite understand how to portray the intricacies of the body and armour with vague blocking. The shoulders are actually supposed to have shoulder-plates on them.
EDIT: Oh!I didn't notice your very useful tutorial on blocking units you just posted .
