Art for Tales of the Setting Sun

Post by doofus-01 »

This is a thread for the campaign I'm working on, Tales of the Setting Sun. My other thread was too big and old, I'll use it for my other add-ons, but for this add-on, I think a new thread is better. I'll need some opinions on sprite-work later, but for now I want to post a portrait draft.

This is not the most important character, but I haven't drawn anything in a while and needed to get back in gear before I move on to the protagonists. There is something disconcerting about the face, if anyone has an insight on why, I'm all ears. Thanks.

It might just be me, but it appears as if the eyes are looking in different directions if you stare at it for a while. Her left eye appears to be looking upwards at something while her right eye appears to be looking at something to the left of her. The green iris/pupil of the left eye also appear to 'twist' in a direction that doesn't seem to be consistent with the right eye.

I agree that the eyes are off. Also I would expect her head to be turned more to where she is looking. Or perhaps it is strange that her eyes are so far to the side when she has turned her head.

Then there's the eyebrows, but I assume those aren't done yet.

The eyes have already been pointed out.

The breasts are rather low, and they're skewed to her right side (and the seashell is therefore skewed to the side as well).

The bulging back/side muscle (the one under the shoulder) seems unusually large for a woman, even for a woman in excellent shape. She'd have to be a bodybuilder to achieve that much muscle mass, I think.

An (admittedly very rough, I am not much of a portrait artist  ) edit to demonstrate some of my points.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks guys, you're right about the eyes.

artisticdude: I think the main difference, as far as back & chest, is that you made her more "at-attention" and smaller. I still think my version is OK in that regard, but it is something to think about I guess. Thanks.

I've got a draft of one of the protagonists now. I got hung up on the neck, but I think it's passable now. The perspective is also something I'm not too confident of, but I don't want to blur the shield.

That neck is nearly as big as the head

Yes, I'm not an expert but I have some concepts about drawing and her shoulders and neck looks kinda strange. The problem with the shoulders maybe is due to the perspective but the neck is actually too long.

Hrmm, I agree the neck wasn't really OK after all, not sure it is really too long by much though. I've re-shaded it a bit so it is thinner.

I think what Aria's eyes lack are lower eyelashes... :hmm:

Aria's left arm seems way too small for me. I think you should reduce the perspective effect on it (or whatever you say in artistic terminology), or make the shield smaller too (especially the strap, that looks very disturbing when compared to the arm).

Foreshortening is the term, and I think you're right: It looks a *bit* over done.

Looking at the filenames, I'd guess you guys are talking about Exanora (girl with tower shield), not Aria (the one with Shell product placement).

Thanks, I was unsure of the perspective/foreshortening. I've changed it a bit, but I'll hold off on posting it for now.

I've made some changes to Aria, might address artisticdude's comment. And some other small changes to make her more slightly more sinister (aside from the color change). It's a separate portrait, not a strange redesign, but it's the same character and I see no reason to start over completely.

I'm also posting Aria's boss/manager because I think it's done.
