Both are a bit rough around the helmets.

You mean they aren't smooth, or they are to grainy? I tried to smooth down the outlines a little in this one.

Good that you brought up the axes! I thought the second ax might not be defined enough, but since you noted them, I am not sure.

How do they comparison?

I actually meant the fact that their helmets need work. Soulhunter's has unexplainable and ugly blacks looking like spilled ink, while marauder's is fuzzy/blurry and hard to read.
Also, I don't think adding outline improved look of the axe. Seems quite the opposite (but this is possibly just due to white background).

Okay. Is this defined and not inky enough?

Myself I kind of prefer the original axes, I mean the bordered ones are ok, but I liked the original better, anyway perhaps the axes can wait a bit, if they are the last thing you fix and you kind of forget to fix them it won't ruin your sprites.

happy forging.

good, I like the original ones better too. Maybe the borders need some smoothing.....they looked a bit grainy to me.

The one thing which really impresses me about the newer Wesnoth unit line is that while they do always have distinct outlines, these are seldom heavy and dark.

Thanks for the compliment! I was worried that some folks might find him a little blurry, so I made this guy with a border for his gun, though it makes the rifle look bulky:
