Both units are quite dark, especially the marine. It's hard to tell what's going on with the torso and gun. More contrast and less dark colors. The core assassin sprite is a great example how to deal with dark/black surfaces.

Aha. Are these things improvements?

Well, I'm not an expert but it looks too soft. I mean it looks like candy floss. I think it's because a lack of contrast. Look at the dwarvish beards: they're darker in the lower part and they have very fine stripes for make the effect of long hairs.
I hope this can help you.

I wasn't planning to work on this again very much but I tried to give his beard some outline:

Here's the attack animation for the assault MA5 assault rifle, being wielded by no other than the Master Chief!

My apologies about the lousy shadow transparency,<br /> I trust it does not obscure the erratic descent of the spent shells.

There's a lot of pixels moving around, especially around the feet.

Maybe the shells should fly up and arc over, rather than just falling. Sprite animations usually look better when they are comically exaggerated.

I avoided this on purpose because I wasn't sure of my artistic skills, but here's a cheap cobbled together try. Any weird pixel movement is due to copy and past afoul.

Happy new Year 2012!!!!!

Okay, I'm still not sure whether I'll use the fancy animation or the original animation for the Chief, but I decided to give the marine the cool curving shells.
If I do stick with the arching cartridges for the chief, I should probably also cut down shell length as below, too:

The attack is in the wrong direction. Have a look at the hex shapes - there is no neighboring hex directly east of the unit, only north-east and south-east. So he would have to hold the gun in another direction.

Ooooo :o :x ooo.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of bows when I drew the angle.......I'll test out the frames tomorrow to see how bad they look.

Any way, I tried my hand at some stuff:

You need more contrast on aliens. Use brighter colors for highlights and darker for shadows.

Please consider some anti-aliasing for the rough blocky borders on outlines of the swords and characters.
