I often find having one or multiple references help a lot.

You'll probably also want to increase the canvas size or your explosion will have square edges.

hmm, better? pic 4 looks a tad like, well, can't put my finger on it, but I feel that maybe I overdid on the smoke effect?

Actually, transition between frames is not very smooth.
Frame 1: small fire, small smoke
Frame 2: med fire, med smoke
Frame 3: med fire, huge smoke
Frame 4: no fire (sic!), huge smoke

There are some leftover pixel-line artifacts behind the smoke in Frame 4. (Upper right corner) The same in Frame 1.
I suggest maybe order like that:
Frame 1: small fire
Frame 2: med fire, small smoke
Frame 3: big fire, big/med smoke
Frame 4: small/med fire, big smoke (begins to fade)
Frame 5: no fire (or very small), big smoke (fades)

EDIT: Ah, and although canvas is bigger, which is better, explosion still will be cut. Canvas size should be big enough to fit WHOLE explosion.

portraits and sprites

Post by Boldek »

after receiving a well done frankie from Powershot the Lord of Frank Frankenstieners, I decided to modify him a little bit, and since he was all alone having adventures, I added a squire to keep him company. feel free to take without credit, and if you don't that's fine, because I totally lose at pixelart. :P

thanks!

I noticed while playtesting them that the knight and the squire were getting tired carrying all that gold and food around, so I made them a pack horse to do the heavy work.
yup, a frankie with a bag. why is the bag open? I dunno, i guess I am just lazy

I felt that he was incomplete, so I added a chest, though the similar colors make it look like a haystack. what do you think?
this one has a chest and the bag is sorta closed.

you better make a second pack horse or you're gonna break that poor horse's back :P Generally the packs hang on either side of the horse like in the first picture although even there they might be a little big and you never (as far as I know) have a large chest sitting on top of a horse. Other then that they look pretty good, ya might just need some more accent between the packs and the horse so they don't blend together as much.

I noted that the mage of light is fine, and the halo is added, but then the light is kind of just glowing around him, while the lantern is to the side.
