Working on some aquatic sprites.

Post by dipseydoodle »

Hey all.

I'm in the process of working on some aquatic sprites and was wondering if anybody had some examples of medieval houseboats, artificial islands etc... I did a quick google search but everything was modern. I'll be using these sprites for my era which I hope to finish this year.

Thanks (and mods I'll use this for posting my art aswel).

Cherry Island, Loch Ness, is the only example of a man-made island that I can think of.

(The crannog link on that page looks like it could be quite useful.)

I believe the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan was built in a lake and involved a certain amount of terraforming.

...I'm not so sure about that. Sprites generally don't become easier or harder to make based on the medium of their references.

Also, using a drawn reference rather than a photo brings with it the possibility of propagating errors or exaggerations which were present in the reference drawing.

Yes, you are right on that.

I've done a lot of nature sketches, and I must say it's quite hard to judge proportions, shades, shapes, etc.. Without being up close to the actual thing.

I'm gonna start out with a bigger sized village type sprite and scale it down.

Well, as I said I'd use this for my artwork... So here's a little sketch I did today. Please critique, it's not finished but will serve as a base for the sprite and portrait...
