Re: Perseo's tryes (elvish legend-breaker & portrait)

Post by tom030890 »

I'm not an expert on sprites, but I feel the chest armour may lack adequate shading (darker behind shield and edge of cloak.)
The lack of a shadow is disconcerting.
The sash looks slightly too uniform in colour, especially at the top as it disappears behind the cloak
The arm seems a little spindly for a bulky barbarian chieftain.
The bears coat seems too uniform in colour, there is a lot of natural variation in the colour of hairs, especially when exposed to varying levels of light.
The straight edge of the shield seems unnaturally vertical, and the boss appears off centre.

I do like the sword blade.

feel free to disagree with any or all of the criticism.

I'm no expert either, but aside from what tom has already said, I think something is wrong with his legs. I think they're too wide, and too thin and spindly (hope you understand what I mean).

I've readen your replies and I've modificated my sprite:
  • I've added more reds and darks to the cloak.
  • I've changed a bit the sash (in my english, the sash is the band which goes from the leg to the arm).
  • I've drawed shadows in the chest body.
  • I've add more strenght to the arm, now is a pixel wider.
I haven't modified the shield because I'm happy with it at the moment.
Thanks for your replies.

I've never really sprited before, and I'm not intending to tread on anyone's toes, but based on your initial work made some changes.

I feel the most significant changes I made were to do the foot shadow, enlarge the sword arm and reshape the shield. Wouldn't be suprised if i made some glaring errors, especially as I was unsure about the base shadow, which was the thing I really felt was missing.

Wow! For being your first try is great! I like very much the work on the arm (thanks very much). I'm not sure with the shield but I think that the problem is that I don't know exacly what kind of shield I want (- -'). The shadow wans't there because it was in an independent layer of the .xcf and I was set its visibility off.
Only two things you must know (I also have this errors when I started): don't use pure black (just use a very dark blue or brown). And the background is better if you put it with a colour between the green and yellow for it.
Anyway I'll continue working on it but thanks very much for your help.

Another one of my projects, now I'm working a bit with atomicabomb in his campaign about forums. I've recycled a sprite that I did when I didn't know anything about how to make it and I've corrected it. It's a monster who represent a horrible "BUG" in the WML.
Here it is:

What do you think about this baseframes for the animation? The attack is something like impacting in the ground with the head of the worm. Maybe I msut change some position? I don't want to start working in the animation till I'm sure that I gonna have the right positions. Thanks for your time.

It looks like he is "growing" extra neck to reach the ground, he does not bend quite far enough. But of course, you could make it deliberate, and do "stretchy neck" anims. But those would be harder to draw than bending him over a bit.

@ baseframe: I think the body could use a bit more outline/contrast. And the mouth isn't dark/contrasty enough. It looks like a round piece of red cardboard atm, imho. The positionning of the mouth is a bit weird, too: I can understand perspective and all, but it looks like the bottom part of the mouth isn't attached to the worm. It lacks a lower lip of sorts... That, or the mouth is too large for the body. And I suggest you look at reference for the teeth, although they're not the biggest issue.

It seems the light source comes from top but slightly to the left. I'd put some shadow on the middle of Its body being cast from his "head". Also I reckon the inside of its mouth should be darker, with probably the brightest part being at the bottom of its mouth cavity.

kapoueII is correct about the body elongating. If you really want to stretch the body you should thin it down to preserve mass. Though it would probably be better impact-wise to just slam the head down.

Okay, I'll correct the shadows and I'll work on the mouth. If I understand you right you're saying to me that the worm animation has the apparience of become longer. That's a mistake, I don't want to make any strange thing so I'll make all the body go following the head movement. I'll post the results tomorrow because now I'm tired for work in the computer.
