i have a problem

i want to create some units.
and i cant get it so that the background of the unit is the wesnoth coulours so i have an whitefield around my unit could u pls help me im new to creating units (sorry for my bad english isnt my mother language)

Use for example a program called Gimp. Make sure you switch the transparency feature on. Save your work in the format called png. Use the size 72x72 pixel for regular units. Have fun.

how iactivate the transparent future and also how to use an existing sprite and make it then transparent?

In the "Layer" menu, select "enable alpha channel" (alpha channel = transparency). Then, select the background with the magical wand tool or something, and delete (or "cut") it (ctrl+x, or cmd+x on mac). The background should now display as a "checker grid" (sorry if it's wrong word, not a native english speaker either), this means it's transparent.
