Transparent Portraits
I was taking a look at he graphic library and I found some portraits I woulld like to use for my campaign except that they have black backrounds
the orcish shaman is made by neoriceisgood
the girl is made by syntax error (also does anybody know of a female archer sprite? if there isnt one I can probably whip up a quick frankenstein or I may not do it at all)

Re: Transparent Portraits
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. Get GIMP. Open portrait in GIMP. Use magic wand select tool (hotkey z by default) to select the black areas. Go to Layer > Transparency > Add Alpha Channel. Press delete. Save.

Back to work. Current projects: Catching up on commits. Picking Meridia back up. Sprite animations, many and varied.

Re: Transparent Portraits
I have one here and another one few posts later. The blond one somewhat matches the Alice portrait.Golden_Soldier wrote:(also does anybody know of a female archer sprite? if there isnt one I can probably whip up a quick frankenstein or I may not do it at all)

You forgot to mention "make the selection a bit smaller to leave the outline".thespaceinvader wrote:Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for life. Re: Transparent Portraits
I did what TSI said and the girls portrait turned out great but the Shamans portrait is more artsy and therefore has a lot of black lines in his head so it turned out weird Ill post em both

Re: Transparent Portraits
Don't use magic want on the second. Try to use Free selection. Draw path along the potrait you want to keep. Invert the selection to remove the black BGGolden_Soldier wrote:I did what TSI said and the girls portrait turned out great but the Shamans portrait is more artsy and therefore has a lot of black lines in his head so it turned out weird Ill post em both

Or use path (http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-tool-path.html) to draw path along the potrait you want to keep. Make path you just creat to selection and Invert the selection to remove the black BG
Sorry for my bad english

Re: Transparent Portraits
ok Ill try it out
Re: Transparent Portraits
I usually enlarge the picture into 400% or so. Then I use about 80% hard eraser near the borders and magic wand to the rest of the background. After that I turn the picture back to original size and get nice smooth outlines. Doing by hand is usually the key to get things done well.
Also, there are no higher level version of the bowwoman and currently I have no intrest to make one.

Re: Transparent Portraits
It's still fairly aliased. To get the best antialiasing, you should use a path to make the selection. Here's an example:
With the shaman it will be a bit more complex, but after you have selected the black, you can edit the selection in the quickmask mode with the eraser tool (you can use a hard brush) to remove the parts that are inside the portrait.
You can also make the path by hand from the start, it's more work, but not all that much with such simple outlines.
What I did was I used the magic wand to select the black area, changed the selection into a path, edited the path on the chin area to exclude the excess of black there, changed the path back into a selection and deleted the selection. It took less than five minutes. With the shaman it will be a bit more complex, but after you have selected the black, you can edit the selection in the quickmask mode with the eraser tool (you can use a hard brush) to remove the parts that are inside the portrait.

Tiedäthän kuinka pelataan.
Tiedäthän, vihtahousua vastaan.
Tiedäthän, solmu kravatin, se kantaa niin synnit
kuin syntien tekijätkin.
