To be frank, I think is looks a little to dinosaur like, particularly the head. I suggest you use the mainline portraits as a reference.
My spritework can be seen here.

The head looks reasonable to me - the stance is setting it apart from the mainline portraits MUCH more - these have a distinctly dinosaur-like stance (i googled a lot of reference on it to make it look right) with the spine sitting at around 45 to 60 degrees, rather than the humanoid 80 to 90 degrees, the torso being a lot deeper and narrower than a human's etc etc. Your linework is good quality, but it doesn't look like what I intended for the saurians. If you're ok with that though, that's cool ;)

Yeah, I agree. While line working I guess I got carried away. So, will come up with something on similar ground as your portraits, TSI. And his head could have a narrower muzzle now when I think about it, thanks Frogger. I do hope putting some metal gear on him were allright though, as I'll follow the same trend on the second take.

I'll play with this current line work and give it a shading at will first, because I did some reading about some techniques, and am curious to work try my hands on it. If anyone wants to use it for any purpose let me know then I will post the outcome.

Additionally, if it's not a big deal, the head could be a little bigger. (For some reason, that's my criticism for every art thing made here XD) And maybe his eyes can be slanted a little, to show more of a dictator kind of look. He's an enemy for a few scenarios but then becomes a good guy, so I dunno.

Before you color, please take note that his armor is mainly a dark black.

"Dark" is to emphasize his dark impression.

And, @Frogger and TSI: He's supposed to look like a Dinosaur.

Also, I have a new portrait "need" not very important, but more important than the archer.

It's basically a basic Saurian Portrait, that should look a bit like the Saurian Ambusher from mainline. I am currently using the default portrait, but that also belongs to another character.

Sorry, I couldn't get back earlier with this another try for the margrave:

Notes: I'm aware shield looks a bit (!) weird, at least not as symmetrical as I envisioned, so I may work on that a bit more (I can't design on comp, sigh). Also I'm planning to put some chain mail around his lower torso while shading. Oh and I got a full body pose but may crop it later on to fit a 400x500 size.

Good, it's good. I prefer the old one a bit, but beggars can't be choosy.

Is anybody interested in animating sprites that are already sprited?

I think the head should be a little less of an angle though.

I'm tackling the headhunter animation, but the unit seems pretty outdated. The shading is pretty basic, there are black outlines everywhere, the shadow is grey and has no transparency whatsoever, the unit faces in the wrong direction, and the pose looks pretty awkward. I'd be willing to draw a new baseframe if you're okay with it, because I honestly feel this unit could look a lot better than it currently does.

Well...not really. Maybe it's just purely nostalgic, but I like the way it is. I plan to switch it's direction, so you can do that, but I would like the base frame the way it is.

We are talking about these:
