Orcish Rookie

Post by Sgt. Groovy »

I've been trying my hand on sprite art, and here's an Orcish Rookie I need for a campaign I'm planning. It's supposed to be a zero-level unit that can level up to a grunt or a leader.

EDIT: Oops, this was supposed to be in Art Workshop.

Moved.

He's WAY too big for a level 0.

And th colours seem a little pastel-y. Otherwise, looks reasonable =)

Maybe a bit, but orcs are still supposed to be larger than human.

Be sure to compare his height to level 1 orcs, too ;)

I did, and they measure about the size of grunts, minus armour. The idea of the campaign is that the player plays orcs and has to built their army from the scratch. In the first few scenarios the player only gets to recruit these, so I don't want to make them total weaklings. In practice they'll be more like ½-level units, almost as tough as grunts, but doing much less damage. I will make them few pixels shorter, though.

He needs darker borders and lighter highlights to improve the shading.

I love a good texture :D and this guy needs more of it.

There are also lots of 45 degree lines around his shoulder and head section which is giving him a strange sloped look.

The club, needs to look more club like, more knobbly, and possibly bigger. Also, the lighting needs work.

Also, his left arm looks thicker and stiffer than his right arm.

There is a flat stiff looking patch in his clothing around his groin area.

And maybe you'd better knock up the contrast a notch, especially on the clothing.

His head needs to look a little more untidy and savage, and possibly less monkeylike.

His limbs, look a big flat, but not pillowed (thank goodness).

Overall, great start. :D Nice to see you getting a place in the AW.
My spritework can be seen here.

Smaller and less pastel version. Now that I look at it, the pose looks terribly stiff (and the arms are set only in 0, 45 and 90 degree angles), I'll probably redo ir from scratch.

Much better. But, he needs darker arms and legs.

I think what he means is that there should be more contrast between the shadows and the highlights, especially on the limbs. But I must compliment you on the overall form of the unit, you obviously have a grasp on anatomical correctness (or whatever you want to call it :P ). The only other thing I can see at the moment that hasn't already been pointed out is that it looks like he's leaning backwards just a bit, perhaps moving his torso a pixel or two to our right might help. :)

A rough sketch for a two-handed grip pose. The distorted proportions of sprite size are challenging, the hands look like they would reach down to his ankles. Another challenge is to make him not to look like he needs a team coloured baseball cap.

Quick point: having him use a club when all potential advancement use bladed melee weapons violates RIPLIB. This may not bother you, however.

I suppose it does, when the enemy is much more vulnerable to impact than blade damage. This would probably have a noticeable effect with skeletons, but I'm not planning to have any undead in the campaign. HI is another possible problem, I'll have to keep this in mind when making up the damage stats.
