Use the original Photoshop-file available on http://opengameart.org/content/cyclops if you want to do adjustments - it is "properly" layered and it could probably help you out. If you do indeed create a derivative of it please feel free to link to your own file in here - would love to see your version of it. In any case, would you mind telling me what era it may be included in? Would like to dump that info on the WT-site eventually.

Edit: Btw, you can work with the PS-file in GIMP as well ;)

Sure, no problem. The portrait will be included in Era of Magic.

If I've not got round to it already (which I might have, I don't remember offhand), the mermaid will go in as an initiate alt as soon as I get my computer back online.

Some amazing stuff in this thread. Though I have no interest in CCG I've been inspired to check out your website. :) Or at least I'm trying, but it's loading very slowly.

For the record I can't find the swordsman alternate in trunk, though the artist is credited in data/core/images/portraits/ARTISTS. Also I realize it's not a democracy, but if it were I'd vote the mermaid in as primary initiate. Looks great! I bet even kitty would have a hard time remembering she didn't draw it.

Yep, this isn't a democracy :P She will be very useable as an alternate and will work just fine as a specific character.
For the standard portrait she misses the primary weapon (the staff) plus has a lot of crown-like decoration in her hair that should be reserved for the higher levels. All other artisic critiques/discussion won't make much sense here - with the artist absent...

We should also commit the latest goblin as a gobbo spearman alt.

I believe there should be no problem: Admittedly the host is crap and low budget since that's on par with my own economical situation :P but it should work well 99% of the time. If it continues to low slowly on any given day, please post info about your browser, os, and location + inet connection.

artistic feedback
..is always nice and of use, but only if the artist is around (and in some cases, if the one giving the feedback knows the goal with the art). The artist(s) that have created the art for WT are not around here, and odds are they never will as they are not really interested in working with WT or BfW unless they're paid. Please consider that when posting, and also keep in mind no revisions will be made no matter what you write, even if it's all 100% valid and good (as described in the first post). You are however always welcome to revise the art yourself or pay them more for revisions.

on the BfW usage of WT art
  • If something is somehow used in BfW I'm very happy about it. If not, it doesn't matter to me as BfW usage is from my perspective a bonus, not a goal with my project. In either case whatever should and shouldn't be included in BfW and why should perhaps be threads of it's own in order to keep this somewhat more manageable. At least when it's suspected it could generate a discussion. Else I have no issues with people (official BfW representatives or other UMC:ers etc) posting here and sharing what they think or intend to do with the content. On the contrary, it's encouraged, and gives me much pleasure to see it used in other projects than WT.
  • Please keep in mind that it's the art directors etc of BfW that decide what should go in that game or not, for whatever reasons. This far, and also in the future unless somebody from BfW explicitly asks/wishes for a specific artwork to be created, no single piece of art has been created with "inclusion in BfW" in mind. Thus, it's easy to figure out why some details are "wrong" and why a picture doesn't cut it for inclusion ;)

Yeah, the mermaid will be an alternate initiate (and the latest gobbo, which wants flipping horizontally before commit), for anyone who wants to commit it in my absence. The alt swordsman is here: http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/wesnoth/trun ... sman-2.png

How about finding a permanent solution for all this attempts at the mermaid portrait?

There will be one in the future. Patience.

I think Kitty mentioned she might rework the current initiate to better match the style.

However, you're exaggerating significantly to say 'all these attempts'. There has, since the new portrait style was brought in, been a grand total of ONE mermaid intiate portrait attempt, which is in the game. The fact that this is going to be used as an alt for the intiiate doesn't make that its original intention.

Well I counted four attempts so far. The last one was the only allmost succesfull.

There is an old artist how put his own version on on this art sharing thingy.

There was a young artist who was doing a underwater mermaid.

I shared the frankenstein, I did with the old one.

Makes it 4 all together. You want links?

No. Perhaps I should correct that statement: one attempt which met the technical and style guidelines for inclusion.

This portrait has been committed as an alternate for the Mermaid Initiate. Getting to the goblin now.

EDIT: both committed, though I had to flip and shrink the goblin to match the style requirements.
