A few things:

- Wesnoth units always look down towards the bottom-right. I.E. the shadows on those crosses should be on the left and top, rather than right and bottom.
- The glint on the colored version is rather uniform, which doesn't really show how metal reflects light. I would suggest looking at real-world pictures of metal reflecting light for inspiration.
- I would suggest making the pelt on the top of the canineman's head "flatter"
- Overall, you need to thicken and shorten your arms and legs on the canineman.
- Jack's head is far too big for his body, but it's about the right size for a normal unit. Make his body at least 5 or so pixels taller and wider.
- The light should be coming from the top right (this is Wesnoth standard).

Great start, keep going!

.png is the format used for sprites (and portraits too, for that matter), because not only does it not compress sprites to blurry smudges, but it also (unlike .JPG and bitmap) supports transparency.

So... is it good enough to start shading?

Is that a knight's helmet? If so, the visor shouldn't blue. That's a motorbike helmet. Knight helmets had a metal visor (see this, for example).
I'm not really around any more, but you can find me in TvTropes.

Oh, right oops... XD

But most sprites I just kinda shade and then give-up on them... If you want you can take any of them and improve them or just use parts of them if you like.

Or maybe someone could offer to use your sprite, which will motivate you to finish it. ;)
Do you want to finish the baby sauropod? I can use it. :D
