Gwiti Ha'atel sprites - Update: Dread Lich finished!

Post by Orcish Shyde »

Having DLed Wesnoth a few weeks ago, I've played enough of The Dark Hordes to think really, it deserves the effort needed to make it mainline again. The first obstacle I saw? The sprite for Gwiti Ha'atel himself. Thus, I got GIMP and began work. So far I have the standing pose and a complete defence animation; as I post this I'm making the magic animation.

(Yes, I just edited the Dark Adept sprite to get an Initiate. For reasons pertaining to the campaign's plot I think team colours can wait until the Deathmaster sprites are done.)

The teal eyes are meant to reflect the glowing blue ones in Gwiti's actual portrait (AKA Darken Volk's - someone should really give Darken Volk his own portrait)

Now, I had intended to get the magic animation for L1 finished, but I decided to play the campaign a bit instead. Currently halfway through frame 2 of 3 of the magic animation.

As promised, here be the sprites of Gwiti zapping people. Messed up frame 1 initially because I didn't know what "Flatten image" meant, but that should be sorted now.

If anyone feels like doing the grunt work for the death animation, be my guest, it'll save me some time. Indeed, I'd appreciate it if someone just posted the Dark Adept death animation having taken off the bits of that sash that I took off Gwiti - the rest is easy xD More to the point I'm unlikely to start on the Deathmaster until the Initiate is completely finished, by me or otherwise.

These are really cool! I remember The Dark Hordes was the first campaign I played back when I got Wesnoth (I think it was at 0.8 then... Not sure, though. Might have been 0.9), and it was always my favourite for some reason. Nice to see someone else that wants it back :)

You know what would be neat? If you put a little teal glow on the inside of his hood--That would be awesome 8)
Anyway, keep up the good work!

Change of heart; I'm going to start work on the Deathmaster sprite now, dying sprites are boring & there's still mainline units that don't have them.

When it comes to it, the Dread Lich's original design was with four legs below the waist; this, I just don't like. No explanation for why it should be that way, and liches are cool enough with a normal human form. Who votes otherwise?

I do not like the Dread Lich's four legs either, mainly because there is no explanation for it...

OK, here we have the standing pose for the Deathmaster. I decided not to go with a red cape, as it would require actual effort to make quality. OK, I'm not normally averse to effort, but the less of my pixel drawing goes into this the more likely it'll be mainlined. xD

For reasons of playtesting, I also did the recolouring for Nati. Since it's such a simple step the brothers will get their sprites simultaneously. Assuming of course that you don't give me cause to rethink the general style of this particular sprite.

I suggest you look into team colours. By using the magenta colours, wesnoth will automatically recolour the sprite for you.

So in other words, I could've just stuck the Gwi'ti head on the Sorcerer body and technically got what I wanted. Damn. I need to think of something more distinctive than a head swap now... EDIT: Unless of course, Wesnoth's got magenta covered for the darker reds used in Gwiti's tabard as opposed to the Dark Sorcerer's one. Which simply requires me to work out how to recolor it properly... If I use the Colourise tool in GIMP, which hue will give me magenta? *isn't going to try to find out at 1:30am*

As mentioned in the page AI linked to, you ened to use the specific colour palette also on that page. It's easy enough to do a manual recolour, though, using the colour selection tool (Hotkey Shift+o) and bucket fill.

You can set the colour down as dark as you want, but you will need to retain some shading. And be aware that the TC will oftne come out looking a lot darker than the magenta.
