Just for the fun of it I drew another female dwarf, this time with a beard. I personally think women with beards are too hard to identify that it probably isn't worth pursuing (that is at least my terrible art skills are unable to create the finer details as they should be )

Yeah, that's probably true. Maybe they could still have short hair though? Something to distinguish them from humans or elves.

Do we really need to go that route? I can imagine female dwarves with something like light sideburns but a full beard just sounds, well, incredibly silly.

It's not unheard of. In Discworld for example all dwarves have full beards.

Also in LotR. That's the thing. It's an arbitrary cliche that people use because it's how other works did it.
