Clever repurposings of game assets?

Post by Simons Mith »

One of Fate of a Princess' charms, IMO, is the way the SkyOne found new uses for existing aspects of the game.
To quote myself -
For example, a shaman healing animation is reused without its halo as a child jumping for joy, which is rather cute.
The berserker laugh is used as just a laugh, in a couple of places.

The Wose dying sound is used when a unit smashes down a wooden fence.
And so on.

There's probably lots of other cases where, oh, an idle animation could be repurposed, or the illuminate ability could be applied to an object moving in a predictable pattern to provide lighting. (e.g. A guard on patrol, carrying a lantern.) You could place a dummy unit with leadership inside a fortress, thereby giving a fortification bonus to the defenders. Then there's the use of multi-hex terrain to produce a pseudo 3D setup - as used by inferno8 to stunning effect in To Lands Unknown. This ancient WIP image of his from 2009 shows the basic idea nicely:

I'd be interested in hearing about other cases where parts of the game have been reused in creative ways. Anyone got any other good examples?
