unit variation based on trait combination

What I can do: I can filter units at a recruiting event for traits and give them overlays based on their traits.

What I want to do is: I want to switch on a variation of the unit based on a filter of traits.

Does it has to be a recruiting event ? Or a prerecruiting event?

Does variation work for portraits too? Or only for sprites? So far it is not working at all.

I am still experimenting in 1.6 Has there been a change in the variation tag?
