PROPOSAL: Online stats for registered users
We really need a way to view different players stats. This would alow for more uses of Wesnoth such as tournaments and the like. I'll write out what I have thought of so far.
You should have to register to be able to join the server. You must create a user name and password, and create a profile. There's no fee, it's just to let the devolpers know how many people are playing their software, and to let the other players know who's who. On the profile it would desplay how many games you've played, how many you've won, and what races you used. These wouldn't include the private multi-player games that were played, only the ones on the official server. The profile could also show what state/province you're from, and the country you live in. You would be able to place your AIM or AOL accounts on their, but it wouldn't be required. All of this would also require a change in the way you log on to the official server. To log on, you would have to type in your user name and password. Only one account per email address would be allowed. You should be allowed to use the same account for the forums.
I'm not sure how much work this would require, and what I've typed above probably doesn't answer all the questions, but it is a start.

I speak what's on my mind.
Which is why nothing I say makes sense.

My comments:
Allowing the same account for the forum would be OK, but probably EXTREMELY hard to code. I think its a bad idea.
IMHO multiple accounts per email address (probably 2-3) should be allowed.
Display of your stats should be optional. Obviously, no one will think you are a good player if they don't know your stats, but anonymity is fine.
I don't want to have to type in my password every time I log in. Perhaps it could be stored in the preferences file? If need be, encrypted?

sure, why not. It's like Americas Army. Every time you logged on, you had to type in this 20 digit password they gave you. I hated it. You're right, as always, we don't need too have the username work with the forum as well. But about the stats, why wouldn't you want people to know how much you all suck compared to me?

The cheap way out of this is to intialize the user database with all existing forum usernames, and PM initial passwords out, which _should_ be scriptable. Doesn't handle new accounts, but placing a notice about it in the signup screen in both the forums and the MP server would kinda serve the purpose. This presupposes the MP server code is solidified and a developer has time to code up an account system, of course.turin wrote:Allowing the same account for the forum would be OK, but probably EXTREMELY hard to code. Most people just want to have fun with this game. There should be a ladder with the 100 best players, and an option to play a game that is worth points. So people could chose if the game they play would give/take them points or not. The normal games wouldn't worth points and wouldn't be in the ladder.
And of course, there would need to be registration accounts, with only 1 account per email, so people wouldn't make fake games to get points.

myself: just like nobody knows you only an 8 year old genius, huh?
me: and just like nobody knows that I'm filthy rich
myself: and just like nobody knows that you're incredibly handsome
me: yes, that too

See http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic. ... 22&start=0 for the discussion on this.
Summary is that I would like it to happen, but first we have to tend to other things, like making multiplayer games stable, reliable, and difficult to cheat at.
