Level up to... same level?

Post by Scaeb »

Is it possible to specify as a level-up-advancement a unit type of the same level?

I'm thinking of one unit line in a faction (allrounder), where you could chose at an advancement to proceed on that unit line (and get the next higher level) or switch specialization (to fighter or archer), but the same level.

I'm thinking in a slightly RPG-ish gameplay here.

Yes, just assign unit_type.advances_to= to the correct unit ids.

You can advance to any level, AFAIK. Advancement is just a... hyperlink... from one unit type to another.

The "level" is just a number assigned to unit type to calculate upkeep (for unit owner) and XP gain (for enemy). It also plays role in calculating leadership bonus.

An example of a unit which levels to another unit of same level is in the A New Order campaign - the Akladian Warrior (level 1) can level to Akladian Light Infantry (level 2) or Akladian Leader (level 1).

The idea is that to be accepted as a leader you first have to learn how to fight, but then you spend some time in learning leading (at a low level) instead of learning to fight better.

(The leader also has 10 more hitpoints, one more movement point, level-1 leadership (which is useful since this faction's core unit is level-0), and 8-3 sword instead of 6-4 spear.)

You could have a lot of fun with that. For example, you could drop the XP required to level and have a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hide, or Man/Werewolf personality. Or a chaotic, elemental wizard who changes elements around a wheel (earth --> air --> fire --> water --> earth…)

Curious question for developers:

It is possible to make a unit choose between levelling to another unit type and AMLA?

If the unit chooses AMLA, and next time it chooses to become another unit type, are the effects of AMLA (more HP, more XP required) still valid for the new unit type?

This is the default behavior for when a unit can both AMLA and advance to another unit type, at least according to the wiki.

They should be. I don't think effects (traits, objects, and AMLAs) are deleted by a change in unit type.
