I must say that your defend .5 frame is lovely, looks like the unit is backing up? to evade the blow (in a similar fashion as the rogue?) and looks better than the normal defense frame. Or at least look more natural.

As a note, How are you intending to make the animation to look with these?

(use the image tag to link to the uploaded sprites there in a similar fashion as mi old post) to see how you plan it to look ingame).

And for frames, the archer is only missing the bow frame for his attack.

I'll take that advice; but first, I'd like to finish the last of the archer's animations.

Thus, I've made two ranged frames for the archer.

Also, I've compiled the frames for attack and defend frames for both the fighter and the archer into simple GIF animations.

hmm a few ideas from default... how about giving him another sword or adding another feature to him besides what he has. since you said they dont want to be re textured rebels, perhaps add something to his headgear? this has historical precedence after all.. many cultures ended up giving their leaders additions to their headgear so their men could follow them on the battle front.

I liked the original captain's banners; but they don't seem practical in a desert setting. Anyone have any ideas of how I could create a desert version?

@binaryquasar: Could you please post some images of such headgear that could fit the desert setting?

I guess you could give it a leathery-parchementish touch it could be made from desert animals like camels.

Can you try to move the banner from his back to his free hand?

I think that the ranged animations should have more frames to make them smoother. probably these would be best for drawing the bow, probably a half drawn bow would make it much nicer.
The ranged animations could also do with an end point, after the arrow has been shot when the bowstring is against the bow again.
The fighter should move his sword more (a little bit more back and also tilt it back a bit.
The archer looks like it has a metal sword, IIRC this was to be used in lvl 2+ units. conversely the captain has a bone looking sword.
the captain could have a larger cloak to distinguish him from the level one unit, or this could be for the hero. you could also shorten the loincloth on the fighter and a put a design of the one of the level 3 units.
I think that the banner is quite good. I think that part of it should show player colours though.
Finally I was wondering why none of the units have shields. these could be made of leather.

I hope this was constructive criticism.

That captain image looks very very cool.

Only suggestion is that perhaps you could put some sort of symbol on the banner??? Preferably one in red to go with the color scheme.
