the animations don't look centered, they veer off into lower hexes.
Was this planned, or is it just not centered in the hex properly?

the bug has already been reported.
http://www.wesnoth.org/wiki/User:Sapient... "Looks like your skills saved us again. Uh, well at least, they saved Soarin's apple pie."
It's a code bug, not a content bug.
It was planned to do this in spite of the bug, because the images still look better even if the bug doesn't get fixed by release time. Also because if anyone makes animations for wesnoth without consulting us, I'd like them to have the proper images to start from. There are few bigger turnoffs for new contributors than saying "Oh, sorry, all your work even though well-done is useless, because the images are out of date." Sometimes they don't come back when you tell them that.
Though the bug, in all likelihood, may not get fixed for 1.2, it will get fixed in trunk.
