Who would like to see a 3D version of Wesnoth? Could be a good idea for wesnoth 3.00!

I wouldn't want a 3D version of wesnoth, redesigning the whole engine and converting all of the campaigns and units would be a waste of time. If I felt a real need to have 3D graphics in a game then I would find another that was fully 3D, or start another (after learning how to program), because the only gain would be to have different versions of all of the units and campaigns, and all of the effort put into the sprites would be wasted, whereas a new game has different campaigns, and different units, so it would be less of a waste of time.

Of course, you're welcome to make a 3D version of wesnoth if you want.

At first I thought this was a ridiculous idea...then I thought about a game called Massive Assault (that I love) which uses a rotating 3d map Hex-based system. It would probably be really cool, but completely unneccesary.

It's like I would really like that Porsche...but that Ford Escort works just fine. :)

Not to mention the fact that it would take a butt-load of work. A whole butt-load of work.

Unless done well, 3d graphics tend to look worse than 2d graphics...

Graphical appeal the first version of wesnoth was ridicolous but now it's a beautiful game...

Until the version 3 or 4...

I'm not a programmer and this is only an idea...

The relation between Wesnoth and Wesnoth3D would probably be about the same as between Lincity and LincityNG. A fork of the game logic with new graphics.

By done well, I mean of a much higher quality than current Wesnoth graphics. 3d graphics on par with current Wesnoth graphic would just not look as good, IMHO.

Not to mention that I don't have 3d acceleration on my computer, and I suspect that is true of multiple other devs and forum members.

okay, great, you can program it, and polish it off. We'll see it in what? 2.0?

Seriously Amex, ideas like this which come from the public don't get implimented or even considered. It involves a great amount of effort from people that work on the game for fun.

(edited for piss poor grammar from an alledged post graduate degree holding individual.)

Great Idea! Wish someone had thought of it earlier. I am sure that it will be implemented on 1 April 2007.
