Not meant to annoy you, honestly.
Yes, just as you think it is gone it comes back...
but that's enough about me, let's talk about my problem.
I can't play Battle for Wesnoth on my computer anymore.
That's because the computer doesn't work.
at all.
During a MetalSlug series marathon my younger brother destroyed my computer.
We have spare parts and replaced things with stuff we knew worked. It is not the powersupply, not the disks (inc. harddrives), not the graphics card, not the monitor, not the soundcard. And yes, I did plug all the cables back exactly where I found them. There may have been problems with the powersupply, because after we changed it things lit up, but the monitor syays "no imput" and yes, it is plugged in. But no beeping, no bios, and I can't turn the computer off, I have to turn it off at the plug. The power is going through the motherboard, because lights shine and the heatsink thing on the processor gets warm when I leave it on for a while.
Do you have any idea what could be wrong? never mind how to fix it yet.
-thanks hugely.

...apparenly we can't go with it or something.

If all of that can be ruled out, it means your motherboard is broken.Midnight_Carnival wrote:

Lights shining and getting warm doesn't prove that it works. Another possible thing could be that the spare parts that you have put in might be incompatible with the other stuff.
I have only limited experience in this field though.

Hate to do this while you're having such a bad time, but Technical Support is for Wesnoth. Moved to Off Topic.

You could have a bad graphics card, or possibly bad RAM, or it could be a number of other things.
What you should do is find the motherboard manufacturer, do a search online and find the manual, which should help with troubleshooting what's wrong.

I know you probably wanted to avoid hearing that but maybe it's time to bring your computer to a repair shop or even buy a new one…

Ok, of the motherboard and ram, which is the most serious, and which is easiest to fix? How can I tell the difference. If it is the motherboard, what can I do, other than getting another one. I have this evil little brother who wants to build robots, he likes soldering stuff, perhaps he can replace one of those silicon candy thingies if it broke, or is that a bad idea.
About the professional help... I will be working again soon, so I might just buy a newer computer and stick the hard drives in, but I want to play Wesnoth Now! [/tantrum]

-anyway, thanks.

Re: Not meant to annoy you, honestly.
RAM is dirt cheap.
I think there may be a bootable DOS application you can fit on a floppy or USB flash drive that will test your RAM, but I don't know the name off the top of my head. You may try booting the computer with just one stick of RAM and see if that works. If not, try the other stick.
The mobo (motherboard) isn't cheap, but usually not that much more expensive. But again, you should really try to find the mobo manual and troubleshoot it.

Most linux-live systems come with that, it's called memtest. Can run from cd or USB (if your PC supports USB-booting).ancestral wrote:RAM is dirt cheap.

Given how cheap computers are today (especially if you already have everything else, OS, screen, keyboard, mouse, etc.) it's often not worth the effort to try to fix it. Can be quite educational on the other hand, so... your call.

I had the same problem before. I think I was 8 years old. I think my family fixed it by using another monitor. I cant really remember I was 8. :S
Did you try replacing the monitor? Don't do it if you don't have another lying around. Luckily my family at that time was high in destroying computers for unknown reasons and buying many to replace them.
But I might be wrong. My suggestions isn't like anyone else's.
