I think the best thing you can do is have him play against other guys too. Sometimes you just get stuck learning around one person's playstyle, and it makes it hard to improve. Once he sees how others play, he'll start picking up new tricks and patterns that might work better against you.

Trolls can counter damn near anything, though. If a proper line formation is made, it's almost always impossible to kill a troll with only 2 units in the same turn. It's easy to kill a grunt with 2 units, since you just have to have all or most hits connect, and lots of people have natural luck...

Sending scouts around their troops can pull a bunch on a wild chase, weakening their main group. People would never fall for that. XD These scouts also can take all their villages since they leave no outer guards.
What you could try is to watch a replay after the game is done from the Load Game menu, tick the Watch Replay box. I find it very entertaining from time to time and as a way of further analysis of tactics.

With the absence of formation the scenarios against dwarves become the most hard ones in the whole campaign.
To solve this, Try using fodder fighter and trolls in 1.18 Tauroch Protector has 120 HP !!! while weird, it gives an easier way to fight against berserker.
