I think the best thing you can do is have him play against other guys too. Sometimes you just get stuck learning around one person's playstyle, and it makes it hard to improve. Once he sees how others play, he'll start picking up new tricks and patterns that might work better against you.

I agree with OP, it is a valid tactic specially vs elves. It might even force a losing elf player to recruit mages to get rid of your saurians at which point you recruit some drake fighters and smeckledorf em' good. OP tactic

Sending scouts around their troops can pull a bunch on a wild chase, weakening their main group. People would never fall for that. XD These scouts also can take all their villages since they leave no outer guards.
What you could try is to watch a replay after the game is done from the Load Game menu, tick the Watch Replay box. I find it very entertaining from time to time and as a way of further analysis of tactics.
