At easy level, with some 300 + something gold to boot I'm always smashed. Or Lisar dies or some of my own leaders do. The trolls are always lev2/lev3 + lev2 ogres pack a lot of punch. And they keep acoming...
My mages always get killed before they manage to level up. So far I've mostly been able to do without them. But on Isle of the Damned, the enemy commanders (liches) drain life from attacking units so effectively that I don't see any way to kill them without white mages.

I get smashed, like a thing that gets smashed, by the enemy.
Any strategy hints? A 3rd level troll is not funny to meet in the forrest.
